Faculty New to Teaching

The UTHSC Faculty New to Teaching track is a year-long program for educators interested in meeting to talk about teaching and learning. The program is open to all faculty but must be nominated by the participant’s academic dean.

The program will include several components:

1. A series of monthly workshops on issues related to teaching and learning. Topics will include writing a teaching philosophy, developing learning goals, creating a course skeleton, effective use of class time, inclusive learning spaces, student engagement, providing effective feedback and assessment to students, and time management. Sessions will be led by TLC staff and UTHSC faculty.

2. Access to print and online resources related to the above topics and other topics that arise. Each participant will receive copies of Parker Palmer’s The Courage to Teach and Will Bain’s What the Best College Teachers Do.

3. Partnership with veteran UTHSC faculty who will serve as mentors. The TLC will support these meetings by paying for lunch or coffee/beverages.

4. An online forum where members of the cohort can continue to meet and discuss thoughts and concerns about their teaching experiences along with opportunities to meet face to face as a group.

5. Support for the cohort should any of the members wish to continue meeting after the initial year’s programming. The group would be self-led with support from the TLC as requested.
