International Year of the Nurse and Midwife
As the first college of nursing established in Tennessee, the UTHSC College of Nursing is taking the lead locally in recognizing 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife, as declared by the World Health Organization (WHO). And what a year it has been!
A worldwide pandemic has changed so much about our daily lives – requiring social distancing, mask-wearing and online education – as health care professionals strive to treat and cure acutely ill patients with the novel coronavirus.
The UTHSC College of Nursing salutes all nurses on the front lines of the health care response to this pandemic, and we are so proud of the nurse leadership demonstrated by our faculty and students in these challenging times.
Our own nursing instructor, Terri Stewart, MSN, RN, was tapped to serve as chief nursing officer (CNO) of the Alternate Care Facility being developed in Memphis to handle a surge in COVID-19 patients. She has been integral to the planning and development of this 401-bed facility and will provide vital nurse leadership if the site opens. Read more here.

Our Dean Wendy Likes, PhD, DNSc, APRN-Bc, FAANP, is one of the principal investigators in a national nursing study that measures the impact of expanded autonomy for advanced practice registered nurses during the pandemic. Learn more here.

Honoring All Nurses on the Front Lines
Dr. Diana Dedmon, DNP, FNP-BC, director of clinical affairs for the UTHSC College of Nursing, and DNP student Fatina Caldwell volunteer at a targeted testing site run by Christ Community Health Services in Hickory Hill. ABout 77 nursing students and faculty members have volunteered more than 780 hours to help ensure COVID-19 testing in the community.
