Since 2001, Dwayne L. Accardo, CRNA, DNP, has been working in the Memphis area as a practicing Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). In 2002, he became the clinical coordinator for nurse anesthesia students from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) who were doing their clinical rotations with Medical Anesthesia Group. In 2006, he became a faculty member for the UTHSC nurse anesthesia concentration. In 2008, he was appointed the Associate Program Director. He was appointed as the Interim Program Director in August of 2014. In January of 2015, he was appointed as the permanent Program Director and holds the rank of Associate Professor. His teaching expertise is pharmacology and obstetrical anesthesia. Dr. Accardo also works with the anesthesia students while teaching them in the clinical area. He is an active member of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA), the Tennessee Association of Nurse Anesthetists (TANA), and the American Nurses Association. He currently serves on the Educational Committee for the Tennessee Association of Nurse Anesthetists.
Dr. Accardo’s expertise is obstetrical anesthesia, an area in which he has worked for more than two decades in the Memphis area. Dr. Accardo has served as a lecturer on various anesthetic topics at multiple conferences on the local, state, and national levels. He has also taught regional anesthesia workshops at both regional and national venues. Dr. Accardo has served on the Continued Professional Certification Assessment Subcommittee for the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists. He has served on the Practice Management Advisory Panel for the American Association of Nurse Anesthetist’s as well. He has served as a reviewer for current obstetrical nursing textbooks and has written the anesthesia chapter in the nursing textbook Pharmacology for Nurses. He also served on the evidence-based regional guideline revision team for AWHONN and helped develop the revised monitoring guidelines for regional anesthesia for obstetrical patients.
Dr. Accardo received his Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from The University of Mississippi Medical Center. He received his Master of Science in Nurse Anesthesia degree from Webster University in St. Louis, and his Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from The University of Tennessee Health Science Center with a focus in Advanced Obstetrical Anesthesia. Dr. Accardo is a fellow of the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (FAANA) and most recently the recipient of the Tennessee Association of Nurse Anesthetists Patty Cornwell Practitioner of the year award.
