Teresa Britt, co-director and director of education, CHIPS, is one of 88 people from 13 countries to recently earn the international Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator-Advanced™ (CHSE-A™) certification. Teresa has been a nurse since 1977, in nursing education since 1982, and specifically in clinical simulation development since 1998. She joined UTHSC in 2005 as an instructor in the College of Nursing and has continually contributed to the growth of simulation activities in the college. Teresa transitioned to a central campus appointment in 2011, when the university moved to provide centralized support for interprofessional education and simulation. She was one of the founding board members for the Tennessee Simulation Alliance and is currently serving as the president of the organization. In 2016,Teresa was selected by the National League of Nursing as a simulation leader. She is an active member of the Association of Standardized Patient Educators, the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning, and the Society for Simulation in Healthcare.
The AFSA CHIPS co-directors, Teresa and Jarrod Young, share a rare honor in that both share the unique distinction of earning advanced certification in both CHSE-A™ and CHSOS-A™ (Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist-Advanced) in one simulation center. These certifications distinguish those who have proven themselves to be advanced specialists in their practice of healthcare simulation while serving as mentors and examples to others in the field.
Dr. Russell shared, “Teresa realized the important benefits of clinical simulation long before most health care educators heard the term. Her recent certification from the SSH as a CHSE-A provides external recognition of her amazing skills and accomplishments that she has consistently demonstrated over almost 3 decades of work in clinical simulation.”
