New AFSA Members!
The Office of Academic, Faculty, and Student Affairs has seen many new faces join our units over the past few months. Here is a highlight of our newest team members:
Dr. Sharon Valente:
Dr. Sharon Valente serves as Director of Institutional Effectiveness. In this role,
she is responsible for providing leadership and oversight of the institutional effectiveness
efforts for academic and administrative units. She works closely with the Associate
Vice Chancellor for Institutional Effectiveness and Decision Support to manage regional
and specialized accreditation activities, to support the institution’s strategic planning
process, and to coordinate reporting to the University of Tennessee System and the
Tennessee Higher Education Commission. She joined UTHSC in October 2023. Previously,
she was the Assistant Director of Curriculum Assessment and Evaluation and Associate
Professor for the Master In Physician Assistant Studies Program in the Herbert Wertheim
College of Medicine at Florida International University.
Dr. Valente holds a PhD from the University of Akron, a MBA from Seattle University,
and a Bachelor of Arts from Cleveland State University.

Rosie Barker:
Rosie is a Learning Specialist in SASSI, assisting students with test-taking, studying,
time-management strategies and general academic support. She is excited to build relationships
with the colleges, and within AFSA ,to ensure the students have the resources and they need to be successful while at
UTHSC and into their professional careers. Before UTHSC Rosie was a high school counselor,
and she has enjoyed the transition into higher education. I consider myself an advocate
for students and work to support them holistically.

Mary Ann Jimenez:
Mary Ann is a Learning Specialist within the Office of Student Academic Support Services
and Inclusion. She works with students seeking academic support, such as time management
and test-taking strategies, through individual student appointments and workshops.
Additionally, she connect students with campus resources for mental health, accommodations
and accessibility, and basic needs. Mary Ann loves coordinating events and workshops,
and encourages those who want to collaborate with SASSI to connect with her. Her primary
role is to be the Learning Specialist for the College of Pharmacy. At this time, she
work with all colleges to support the needs of their students. As a member of Student
Success, she supports neighboring offices to help fulfill the needs of students inside
and outside the classroom.
