Student Social Justice and Diversity Healthcare Leadership Award

The Student Social Justice and Diversity Healthcare Leadership Award recognizes UTHSC students (i.e., undergraduate/graduate) from the colleges of dentistry, graduate health sciences, health professions, medicine, nursing and pharmacy, whose actions demonstrate the importance of social justice activism, equity, and diversity while positively impacting UTHSC and the community. 

  • Social Justice is evaluated based on efforts to educate people on social justice issues on campus and community and have shown evidence of a significant impact on addressing power, privilege, and discrimination to foster inclusiveness and a socially just society.
  • Diversity is evaluated based on efforts of improving the campus climate by working on and promoting initiatives that increase the campus community’s understanding of diversity (i.e., cultures; values; beliefs; experiences; perceptions) and provides opportunities for cross-cultural exchanges.
  • Equity is evaluated based on efforts to create and sustain equitable practices stemming from recognized differences and needs of individuals or groups within organizations, groups, committees, or boards.
  • Nominations can be made by any faculty member, student, or staff.
  • The nominator is responsible for submission of the nomination package and informing the nominee.
The nomination process for 2022 is closed.

One award package in .pdf format, in the following order:

  1. Completed Nomination Form (this form to be completed by the nominator)
  2. Nominator submits responses to the four questions:
    • Explain why the nominee deserves to be recognized with this award.
    • List nominee's involvement on campus and in the community, highlighting social justice contributions.
    • Provide one example of how the nominee’s actions facilitates and encourages the acceptance of diverse views, backgrounds, and experiences and/or is evident while engaged in service activities.
  3. Contact information for at least 2, and up to 4, references.

References will receive an email from the Office of Inclusion, Equity, and Diversity with a short form requesting their feedback on the nominee. Nominators are encouraged to contact the references to let them know to expect an email from OIED, as nominations will not be considered complete without completed reference forms. 

Dependent on nominations, one finalist from each college may be awarded the Student Social Justice and Diversity Healthcare Leadership Award  and will receive a one-time $500.00 stipend for professional development (i.e., conference; webinar; membership; subscription) in the areas of social justice in healthcare, cultural diversity/competence in healthcare, implicit bias in healthcare or student healthcare organization conference in addition to a commemorative wall plaque and certificate. 

The nominations will be reviewed and ranked by the review committee. One finalist from each college may be selected as the awardee and were announced at the UTHSC Impact Awards Ceremony on December 6, 2022 at noon (CST). This ceremony was hybrid and open to friends, family and other members of the UTHSC community near and far!
