James W. Haynes, MD, MBA, FAAFP, named Interim Dean

Effective December 1, 2021, the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center, is pleased to announcement the appointment of Dr. James Haynes as the new Interim Dean for the UT College of Medicine Chattanooga after the retirement of Dr. R. Bruce Shack on November 30, 2021.

 About Dr. James Haynes:

  • Leadership Roles:  Interim Dean, University of Tennessee College of Medicine Chattanooga, and Chair of the Department of Family Medicine -- Immediate Past President of the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Medical Society
  • Military Career snapshot:  Dr. Haynes spent 24 years in the United States Air Force as a doctor and health care administrator, including his tour of duty in Iraq when he was part of a surgical evacuation team that treated gravely injured servicemen and servicewomen.
  • Secret to success:  “If you want to be a good family doctor, you have to improvise, adapt, and overcome.”
  • Guardrails for a successful career in medicine and life:  "Integrity. Diligence. Compassion. Translated to human actions, these three words can mean: Do the right thing, work hard and love others."

The son of an Army medic, Dr. Haynes grew up at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where he graduated from high school.  Dr. Haynes attended North Carolina State University where he was commander of his R.O.T.C. unit, and later attended medical school at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD. He completed his residency in Family Medicine at Eglin Regional Hospital, Eglin Air Force Base, FL and served 20 years in the Air Force. His last military assignment prior to completing his military career and joining the University of Tennessee College of Medicine Chattanooga Faculty was as the Program Director of the Eglin Air Force Base Family Medicine Residency.

Dr. Haynes was named the Uniformed Services Academy of Family Physicians' Family Physician of the Year in 2003 and was privileged to serve as the Family Medicine Consultant to the Surgeon General of the US Air Force from 2005 to 2007. He has taught in Graduate Medical Education for over 13 years and completed the Michigan State University Primary Care Faculty Development Fellowship in 2007 as well as the National Institute for Program Director Development Fellowship in 2010.

Dr. Haynes also holds a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Tennessee Knoxville for his Masters in Business Administration.  He has served as Chair of the Department of Family Medicine at the UT College of Medicine Chattanooga since 2019, and is the immediate Past President of the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Medical Society.  He was honored as a recipient of the 2020 Chattanooga Champions of Healthcare Awards for Physicians and Academics.
