Behavioral Health Services for UTHSC Residents
The University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Department of Graduate Medical Education provides mental health services for residents through the Student Assistance Program (SAP). SAP offers face-to-face, short term, professional counseling for academic and work issues, marital and family concerns, substance and alcohol abuse, stress, anxiety, and depression. Not only does SAP offer counseling, but also Personal Assistance services, and Wellness Support. See below for more details.
The services of SAP are totally confidential and you will incur no out of pocket expenses. You can receive 6 face-to-face counseling sessions per year or per issue. Spouses and partners may also be included in the counseling sessions. Although you may opt for phone counseling, you will find that you have a convenient choice of counselors located on campus at UHS.
The counselors at UHS are available:
Mondays: 10:00 - 4:00
Tuesdays: 4:00 - 6:00
Wednesdays: 10:00 - 4:00
Thursdays: 8:00 - 12:00
For ease in making a counseling appointment, we have openings during the lunch hour on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. The Tuesday evening time slots are also available for your busy schedule.

SAP SERVICE OVERVIEW
The Student Assistance Program (SAP) is a confidential program that motivates residents experiencing difficult personal situations to seek or accept professional assistance thus preventing personal concerns from undermining their well-being and academic performance.
SAP Inclusive Services Elements
Up to Six (6) Face-to-Face Counseling Sessions – When residents call the eni toll-free number, they will receive an intake and clinical needs assessment by an eni licensed health professional. The client may receive immediate telephonic counseling if warranted. The client will then be referred to an eni network provider either on or near campus for up to six (6) counseling visits. The resident may also elect the option of telephonic counseling for additional sessions.
National Network – eni provides an extensive national network of qualified counselors to meet the needs of eligible residents. On-campus resources will be included in eni’s network as well as other providers convenient to the resident’s location for those requiring a more confidential setting.
Care Management - eni’s care management team is composed of licensed health professionals with various specialties. They work collaboratively with providers in the national network to ensure all services are delivered consistently and meet eni’s standards of clinical care.
eni Health Topics Line - Offers toll-free brief telephone recordings on a variety of behavioral health topics. Callers are encouraged to access the SAP for further assistance.
Free Legal Consultation and Referral - eni’s network of over15,000 consulting attorneys located throughout the U.S. and Canada provide immediate telephone consultation. Face-to-face meetings are available at discounted rates.
Free Financial Referral - Toll-free telephonic consulting, to a non-profit credit counseling company for debt consolidation and personal budget guidance. Financial planning resources are also available.
Universal Language Translation - Access to the SAP for employees whose primary language is not English is facilitated through AT&T operators.
Satisfaction Surveys – Residents have the opportunity to critique their provider and treatment experience using multiple state-of -the-art response methods including internet, telephone, fax and mail.
Personal Assistant - Your BalanceWorks® Personal Assistant (PA) is a work/life expert who provides you with useful referrals, research, or information on just about any topic. You are assigned your very own exclusive personal assistant who is available 24/7 to respond to your requests - helping you make informed decisions while saving you valuable personal time.
Wellness Support - BalanceWorks® Wellness Support helps you achieve and maintain your health and wellness goals by giving you the motivation, information, and support you need to make healthy decisions every day. • Receive two telephonic Wellness Coach Calls with a Certified Wellness Coach (2/per academic year). • Access hundreds of fitness, nutrition, and mental health articles, interactive lessons, tools, and videos. • Complete Health Risk Assessments and participate in online stress management trainings.
Mobile Access - Obtain free utilization of the BalanceGo Mobile App to access all of your Counseling, Personal Assistant , or Wellness support needs. Also, quickly find Campus Wellness events throughout the year to participate in.
If you are a UTHSC student or employee, you may now schedule appointments, exchange messages with UHS staff, complete forms or surveys, check your financial account summary, or review/print immunizations through a secure online web-based portal using your NetID and password!
