Didactics
The pediatric pulmonology fellow will participate in several didactic conferences during his/her training.
Weekly
The pediatric pulmonology division conducts a weekly Fellow conference where topics in respiratory physiology and various clinical pulmonary disease processes are discussed.
There is a weekly conference on pediatric cystic fibrosis conducted by the pediatric CF center at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital.
The fellow will be expected to attend weekly pediatric grand rounds conducted by the department of pediatrics.
There is also a weekly mandatory fellow’s conference conducted by the UTHSC GME office where various topics common to all fellows, such as professionalism, malpractice, etc. are presented.
Monthly
In conjunction with the pediatric radiology department, a monthly conference is given where interesting radiological studies are presented and discussed.
In association with the various pediatric surgical subspecialties, a monthly conference is presented dealing with multiple topics involving the pediatric airway. Also, there is a monthly pediatric aerodigestive center conference.
The UTHSC pediatric pulmonary division participates in the monthly Mississippi River Conference where various regional pediatric pulmonology centers take turns presenting interesting clinical cases.
Yearly
During the first year of training, the pediatric pulmonology fellow will be required to attend the pediatric bronchoscopy instructional course provided on a yearly basis by Dr. Robert Wood at the University of Cincinnati.
UTHSC presents a mandatory research conference lasting one week per year where the research method, statistics, exposure to the IRB, etc. are taught to the fellows.
Finally during his/her training, the fellow will be encouraged to attend the yearly North American Cystic Fibrosis Conference and the American Thoracic Society International Conference, particularly, if he/she has a research poster or talk to present.
