The M-3 OB/GYN Clerkship in Chattanooga is organized in an eight-week block:

  1. Two weeks on the obstetrical service
  2. Two weeks on the gynecologic service
  3. One week on the gynecologic oncology service
  4. One week on Night Float
  5. Two weeks of OB/GYN Clinics

From two to four students can be scheduled for the clerkship per eight-week block. The purpose of this core clerkship experience is to learn and understand the basic principles and practice of obstetrics and gynecology and develop a general understanding of women’s health.

Clerks will have two weekend call responsibilities during the rotation. Students are expected to attend rounds, conferences and lectures associated with the respective services. The rotation involves both inpatient and outpatient care of obstetrical and gynecologic patients, including assisting and/or performing related procedures such as deliveries, ultrasounds and office procedures as well as major gynecology cases. Departmental faculty include areas of general obstetrics and gynecology, reproductive endocrinology, gynecologic oncology, perinatology, advanced endoscopic surgery, and gynecologic-urologic surgery.

During the clinic weeks, students work in both private and resident offices. Reproductive-endocrinology and Maternal-Fetal experiences are also part of these weeks.  Each student will spend a half-day with a radiologist reading mammograms and also join a community worker for a home visit to a patient participating in support programs.

Assignment of grades is based on clinical performance (determined by evaluations from residents and staff) and scores on the written examination administered at the end of the rotation. Each student will also give a short presentation to peers and the clerkship director. Weekly quizzes help students to pace required reading.

The UT College of Medicine - Chattanooga Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology sponsors a comprehensive four-year residency program for 16 residents (four residents at each level.).  For other information about the residency as well as our clerkships (housing, meals, etc.), go the links below:

The Obstetrics and Gynecology Clerkship is an eight week block with the student rotating four weeks in Obstetrics and four weeks in Gynecology. This clerkship is an introduction to the care of women of all ages and emphasizes those aspects of care applicable to all physicians, regardless of ultimate career goals. It provides the knowledge and clinical experience necessary to develop basic skills diagnosis, treatment options, patient education, economic considerations, and patient values. The program is oriented to help students develop the clinical skills essential for encouraging optimal women's health.

Students attend and are assigned patients for morning rounds for Obstetrical and Gynecological Services. They attend daily medical student lectures and in addition resident didactic lectures every Friday at noon and diabetic lectures every other Thursday at noon. Students also attend department Grand Rounds every Friday morning to further their learning experiences.

The didactic portion of the program comprises Problem Based learning rather than the usual lecture method. The total program is very clinically oriented. Each student is required to do two case presentations during the rotation, one in OB and one in GYN. These are actual cases they experienced during their rotation. They receive computer training (PowerPoint) to assist with their presentations. Students have a surgical skills class to teach the proper ways of suturing.

Students take two weekend calls and six weekday calls during their rotation. Weekday call extends up to 8:00 pm and weekend call is 24 hours. Call adds to the clinical experience learned during the day. Meal tickets are provided to the students clinical experience learned during the day. Meal tickets are provided to the students on their call nights and can be obtained through the Student Affairs Office.

Approximately two weeks before the end of the rotation one faculty member does a two-hour exam review with the students; they are given sample tests. This is to identify problem areas prior to final testing. Faculty and residents complete clinical evaluations of the students comprising 70% of the final exam grade and the remaining 30% is from the written exam grade. Students complete evaluations of the faculty and residents at the end of their rotations to document their overall experiences. The program is oriented to help students develop the clinical skills essential for encouraging optimal women's health.
