Where We Live

There are many diverse, culturally rich neighborhoods in Memphis. Some are close to the Medical Center in an urban setting while others are a bit further out, offering a more suburban way of life.

A recent study by smartasset ranked Memphis is the third most affordable city in the country. Adjusted for taxes and cost of living, $100,000 is worth $86,960 in purchasing power in Memphis.

Learn a little more about the neighborhoods in which UTHSC residents/faculty/staff live and why they love them!

map of Memphis neighborhoods

Bartlett/Cordova
Really great outdoor spaces with parks and trails. Lots of kids activities in the community. Close to Shelby farms and the green line. Close enough to all the shopping places. Great, friendly neighborhoods with very affordable houses for rent/buy, quieter than the city. Good schools. Only 25 min on I-40 to get to most of the hospitals downtown. -Trent Judd, MP Class of 2027
Downtown
Living downtown is one of the best options at UTHSC! About a 10 minute or less drive to campus and hospitals, it has a large variety of housing including luxury apartments, reasonably priced apartments/condos, and houses. Living downtown gives you the option to walk to coffee shops, restaurants, and nightlife including the FedEx Forum and Beale Street. Also, you can easily access the bluff and Tom Lee Park for running, walking, basketball, pickleball, and picnics! Many residents live in the South Main area of downtown that allows the easily access to walkable attractions. For those who want the perks of living in South Main but with a neighborhood feel, check out South Bluffs- a cute gated community with houses for rent/sale and apartments for rent!- Dagny Vaughn, MP Class of 2028
East Memphis
My wife and I love living in East Memphis. It’s about a 20 minute commute to work each day, but the traffic is never bad, and the trade off is worth it in my opinion. East Memphis has tons of restaurants, shopping centers, and parks to take your kids or dogs. We still find our way downtown frequently because the drive isn’t bad at all, but we also find ourselves getting out of the city and into nature more frequently than many of our peers because getting out of the city is a much shorter commute when you already live towards the edge of the city. We have easy access to the city and easy access to the suburbs and beyond. It’s the best of both worlds!- Erik Reidel, MP Class of 2026
Germantown/Collierville
Although the commute is about 30 minutes, I love our neighborhood (Old Germantown) with its old trees and larger lots. Great public schools, great parks, and great places to walk. -Melissa Hayes (Program Coordinator)

Collierville was named "America's Best Main Street" in 2014 by Parade magazine.

Harbor Town
Living on Mud Island is very convenient if you want to live <10 minutes from majority of the hospitals where we work, FedEx Forum, the Orpheum, downtown restaurants, access to take long walks, play with your dog at the dog park or roam around our new Tom Lee Park.  Houses are typically more expensive in this area, but there are plenty of gated apartment complexes with pool amenities.- Brittany Brown, MP Class of 2025 and MP Chief
Midtown
Midtown is a very popular place to live! It has more of a residential feel than downtown, but you are still about 5 minutes away from the hospitals. Midtown is home to many different smaller neighborhoods- Historic Evergreen district, Central Gardens, Cooper Young, etc. It is very easy to buy or rent with affordable options. The food scene is wonderful with lots of locally owned, diverse cuisine. It’s family friendly and a quick drive to the Memphis Zoo, Overton Park, and all the downtown amenities such as FedEx Forum (Grizzlies games and concerts), The Orpheum, and lots of others!- Paige Seabrook, MP Class of 2025 and MP Chief
Olive Branch, MS

Huge yards, very convenient (two malls within 10 minutes, three Krogers, 4 Walmarts, two movie theaters, several parks, developments left and right, concerts, 20-25 minutes to ROH or LeBonheur parking. Only drawback is driving to Germantown, but if you’re out by 7:10, you won’t see any traffic. – Kamron Robinson, MP Class of 2025

Southaven, MS

Great suburbs, nice neighborhoods with good pricing , easy access to great entertainment, shopping, and parks. 15-20 minutes from ROH/LeBonheur and 30-40 minutes from Baptist.- Robert Tatum, MP Class of 2027

Extremely affordable housing (w/ SPACE & YARDS!) & accessibility to everything you could need. Getting to the 901 is easy living right off the highway - happy to be residing at the top of the ‘sip!- Aaron Garcia, MP Class of 2027
