The Pediatrics Residency training program at Children's Hospital at Erlanger (formerly T.C. Thompson Children's Hospital) provides the highest quality education with state-of-the-art facilities.

We are located in Chattanooga, TN, a family-friendly city boasting a variety of outdoor activities, an active downtown riverfront, and Southern hospitality. Our mission is to provide a safe and supportive learning environment that will promote the development of excellent pediatricians prepared for independent practice in a medical world that is in constant evolution. 

Philosophy:

The Pediatrics Residency program at Children's Hospital at Erlanger strives to provide a balanced education which prepares the graduating resident for any pediatric career, whether general or specialty; inpatient or outpatient; academic, community, or rural.

  • Program provides broad general pediatric experience including resident continuity clinic and walk-in clinic, acute care evening clinic, well-baby nursery, private office rotation, community/advocacy rotation, emergency medicine and inpatient experiences.
  • Subspecialty rotations provide one-on-one learning between resident and faculty in outpatient, inpatient, and procedural settings.
  • Critical care rotations can be tailored to meet the needs of individual residents 
  • The volume and variety of patients provides exposure to a full range of well child care as well as disease pathology at all ages.

Educational Aims

Our residents will be ensured an educational program that is taught by faculty dedicated to resident education using patient care based teaching and a structured didactic curriculum. 

Our program will facilitate learning and assist our residents in acquiring the information and skills they need to become proficient pediatricians who are capable of optimizing the care of children in either general or subspecialty practice.

Our graduates will be advocates for children, practice with the highest ethical standards, provide excellent medical care and be committed to life-long learning.

  • Training Sites:  Children's Hospital at Erlanger and Siskin Children's Institute
  • Facility: 107 bed regional tertiary care facility including a 64 bed Level IV NICU with Neonatal Transport Team
  • Program Size: 8 residents at each PGY level, 4th year chief resident
  • Level I Pediatric Trauma Center with 14 bed PICU
  • State of the art Pediatric Emergency Department open 24/7 and staffed by board certified Pediatric Emergency Medicine Physicians with ~40,000 visits/year
  • Call:  A night float system minimizes overnight call to 2 or less per month 
  • Time Off: Average of 1 day off in 7; 3 weeks vacation per year, 1 week conference per year
  • Faculty: 51 hospital-based physicians (faculty members outnumber residents)
  • Approximately 50% of graduating residents enter a fellowship program
