The Pediatrics Residency training program at Children's Hospital at Erlanger (formerly T. C. Thompson Children's Hospital) provides the highest quality education with state-of-the-art facilities.

We are located in Chattanooga, TN, a family-friendly city boasting a variety of outdoor activities, an active downtown riverfront, and Southern hospitality. Our mission is to provide a safe and supportive learning environment that will promote the development of excellent pediatricians prepared for independent practice in a medical world that is in constant evolution. 

Residency Program Highlights

  • Continuously ACGME-accredited since 1966
  • Sponsoring Institution: University of Tennessee College of Medicine Chattanooga
  • Training Sites:  Children's Hospital at Erlanger and Siskin Children's Institute
  • Program Size: 10 Residents at each PGY level (effective July 1, 2024)
  • Schedule: X+Y (3 weeks in core rotation, 1 week ambulatory)
  • Facility: 130 bed regional tertiary care facility, including a 64-bed Level IV NICU with Neonatal Transport Team and 46 acute care beds
  • Newly expanded! Level I Pediatric Trauma Center with 18 bed PICU
  • State-of-the-art Pediatric Emergency Department open 24/7 and staffed by board certified Pediatric Emergency Medicine Physicians with ~40,000 visits/year
  • Call:  A night float system minimizes overnight call to 1 time only on inpatient and PICU rotations
  • Time Off: Average of 1 day off in 7; 3 weeks vacation per year, up to 3 weeks of sick leave per year; up to 6 weeks of maternity/paternity leave per residency; up to 5 CME days a year for national or regional conference attendance
  • Faculty: 86 hospital-based physicians (faculty members outnumber residents)
  • Approximately 50% of graduating residents enter a fellowship program
