Divison Chief

Dr. Patrick Koo is the Division Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care, Clerkship Director of Internal Medicine, and an Associate Professor of Medicine. A board-certified pulmonologist and intensivist, he is dedicated to advancing both patient care and medical education. With a passion for lung disease and pathophysiology and the care of critically ill patients, he leads innovative teaching efforts in simulation and point-of-care ultrasound within the Clerkship and Internal Medicine Residency curriculum and mentorship in research training.

Dr. Koo grew up in Miami, Florida. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Miami majoring in chemistry and microbiology. He earned his medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine, completed residency training at the University of Connecticut Primary Care Internal Medicine program, and pursued fellowship training at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Furthering his commitment to research and education, he also earned a Master of Science in Clinical and Translational Research.

Dr. Koo has a deep interest in both clinical practice and epidemiological research, especially in research methods. He focuses on studying sleep apnea, diaphragm dysfunction, heart failure, COPD, and alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency, with several publications in these areas. He has contributed to the field of pulmonary physiology through writing book chapters, further expanding knowledge in this area.

In his role as Division Chief, he is actively involved in strategic planning and expansion efforts, working to shape the future of the division while fostering a collaborative, cutting-edge approach to patient care and education. His research interests and contributions continue to impact the field, particularly in improving treatment protocols and advancing clinical methodologies.

When he is not working, he focuses his time on his family, photography, fishkeeping, attending orchestral concerts and musicals, and traveling.

Fellowship

Dr. Radhika Shah is the Program Director for the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship.  She is also a pulmonologist and intensivist with UT Erlanger Respiratory and Critical Care. Dr. Shah completed her Internal Medicine residency at Yale New Haven Hospital, and her Pulmonary and Critical Care training at University of Maryland Medical center, with a focus on medical education and critical care simulation. Her clinical focus includes interstitial lung disease, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and obstructive sleep apnea.
