Psychiatry
The division of psychiatry within the department of internal medicine is headed by Jon Cohen, MD. He is a board-certified psychiatrist who has been on the teaching faculty of the IM department for over thirty years. Dr. Cohen's area of expertise is consultation-liaison psychiatry. All IM residents (along with Family Medicine and Neurology residents) spend 2-4 weeks during their second or third year of training on the CL Psychiatry team. This team also includes 3 Advance Practice Providers (psych NP or PA), several master's level social workers, and a recovery navigator specializing in addiction. Residents learn about the interface between mental health and medical issues, along with refining their knowledge of complex psycho-pharmacology regimens. Jennie Mahaffey, MD is also an active board-certified faculty member, who has been at Erlanger for a decade in various capacities. She is working to integrate behavioral health providers into the primary care clinics staffed by IM residents and attending faculty. The division is growing and hopes to start a psychiatry residency training program at UTHSC-Chattanooga in the next few years.
