EME-40110: Junior Internship
This clinical rotation allows fourth-year students to function as junior interns with increased autonomy in patient care. Students must demonstrate competency in all of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. Students will have opportunities to assist in the evaluation and management of critically ill and injured patients under the direct supervision of senior residents and faculty from the Department of Emergency Medicine. Students assist in procedures such as wound management; trauma resuscitation; fracture reduction and splinting; central venous access and more.
Students have a direct role in patient care similar to that of a first-year resident but are more closely supervised and directed. Students are expected to independently perform a patient history and physical examination then develop a differential diagnosis and treatment plan for common emergent conditions.
Faculty provide a total of 20 hours of didactic education based on the Model of Clinical Practice of Emergency Medicine which may focus on topics such as: acute emergency procedures; ECG interpretation; Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS); toxicology and drug management; mangement of arrhythmias and other life-threatening conditions.
