Season's Greetings from the Chancellor
December 14, 2021
Hello and Season's Greetings,
For over a dozen years, I have had the pleasure and privilege of serving as the chancellor
of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. As I prepare to retire from
my position in the next few months, I reflect on all we have accomplished together.
The important milestones we have reached are due in large part to your steadfast support.
The past year has been a challenging, but good period for the UTHSC.
2020-2021 was marked by significant successes in enrollment, strong total revenue,
growing revenue from sponsored programs, a record number of degrees awarded, and record
growth in research awards. At the same time, tuition has remained flat for the fourth
year in a row.
These successes move the University toward its goal of becoming a top-quartile academic
health science center across its missions of education, clinical care, and research
and all were achieved despite the challenge of the global pandemic.
We continue to deal with COVID-19. It has been an ongoing challenge that forced us
to change the way we do business, but we have met that challenge. The campus is operating
under a new hybrid model that is very successful.
As the year draws to a close and my tenure nears its end, I express my deep gratitude
to all those who have contributed to our success. I ask you to welcome my successor,
Dr. Peter Buckley, who has been my friend and colleague for over 20 years. As a world
class psychiatrist, he has led both the Medical College of Georgia and Virginia Commonwealth
University's Medical College of Virginia.
Thank you for recognizing and fostering the excellent work taking place at UTHSC.
Your continued investment will propel the university into its next chapter, building
on our achievements of the last twelve years.
Carol and I wish you and yours health and prosperity in the new year, and I look forward
to a future full of possibility.
Steve Schwab, MD
