Translational Sciences Shared Resource

The Translational Sciences Shared Resource (TSSR) at the UTHSC Center for Cancer Research offers a wide range of services specifically designed to support cancer and cancer-associated research projects, with a primary emphasis on genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, microbiome analysis, etc. Our goal is to expedite and enrich cancer-related research, which will ultimately lead to better understanding, diagnosis, and treatment options for cancer patients.

Our team is dedicated to assisting researchers at every stage of their projects, from designing studies to optimizing sample collection and processing, quality control measures, and all the way through to data analysis. We have developed partnerships with vendors to ensure that we can access high-quality services and cutting-edge technologies for our research projects, all while keeping costs reasonable.

We assist with planning for the following services:

  • DNA and RNA isolation
  • DNA library preparation (Hybrid Capture, AmpliSeq)
  • Whole genome sequencing (WGS)
  • Whole exome sequencing (WES)
  • ATAC sequencing
  • RNA sequencing (standard RNA-seq, small RNA-seq, Iso-Seq)
  • Targeted sequencing (For example, cancer-associated gene panel is available upon request)
  • Shotgun Metagenomics
  • etc.

Additionally, we assist in the development of novel platforms (metabolomics, single-cell sequencing, etc.).

To keep track of our samples and manage the complex processes involved, we utilize the LabVantage laboratory inventory management system (LIMS). This system helps us monitor each sample closely, starting from the moment it arrives until it's processed and analyzed. We work closely with the UTHSC Center for Cancer Research Biorepository Shared Resource to ensure smooth collaboration and efficient management of samples throughout their journey.

Furthermore, informatics support is available through the UTHSC Center for Cancer Research Computational Sciences Shared Resource.

Acknowledgment

This facility and the faculty director are supported by the UTHSC Center for Cancer Research. We ask that researchers utilizing the facility to acknowledge its use as follows:

This research is based in part on data obtained at the UTHSC Translational Sciences Shared Resource, which is supported by funds provided by the UTHSC Center for Cancer Research.

Sustainability

The core is directed by Faculty Director Dr. Wenjing Zhang, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology, College of Medicine. For the core to be viable, sustainable, and to provide its services across the campus for the foreseeable future, we request its users to include the Faculty Director as key personnel with support in their grant applications. Including core charges in grant applications is also recommended. Dr. Zhang’s CV, Biosketch, and letter of support are available upon request. Including Dr. Zhang as a co-PI or co-I in the grant proposal will greatly benefit individual projects, as she will provide expertise, guidance, and training.
