Trauma Anesthesia Fellowship

Application Requirements

Foreign medical graduates interested in the fellowship must provide documentation that they graduated from a medical school accepted by the World Health Organization (WHO), successfully completed a residency in anesthesiology and hold an unrestricted license to practice medicine in their country of residence.

The Department of Anesthesiology accepts non-U.S. graduates and will sponsor H1B-visas.

  • Current Curriculum Vitae
  • Personal Statement
  • Two current reference letters
  • Copy of medical school diploma
  • Copy of anesthesiology degree
  • Copy of Current medical license
  • Copy of USMLE Step 1, 2, and 3 Transcripts
  • Copy of ECFMG Certification
  • Documentation supporting citizenship status (if applicable)

Internal Extra Pay options: $100/hr

program director imageWelcome to the Trauma Anesthesiology Fellowship at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.  Our program is based at The Elvis Presley Trauma Center at Regional One Health, A very busy Level 1 Trauma Center, treating over 4,500 critically injured patients annually. As the only Level 1 facility within a 150-mile radius, serving Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas and Missouri. This fellowship offers a structured pathway for advanced education in the perioperative management of high-acuity trauma patients, preparing you to deliver expert care in this complex and fast-paced environment.

Fellows will gain hands-on experience in trauma anesthesiology through rotations in the Trauma Operating room, Burn Operating room, Shock Trauma Bay, Trauma ICU, and Burn ICU. Additional elective opportunities include Acute Pain, Regional Anesthesia and Echocardiography/Ultrasound, providing a well-rounded and comprehensive training experience.

Academic Qualifications

  • Completion of an anesthesiology residency program
    • Must have 3 years clinical anesthesia training and 1 year internship
  • Strong performance in medical school and residency training
  • USMLE/COMLEX scores Steps 1, 2, 3
  • ECFMG Certification (if applicable)

Clinical Experience & Skills

  • Competence in general anesthesia and perioperative management
  • Experience in advanced anesthetic techniques relevant to the fellowship (e.g., regional anesthesia, cardiac anesthesia, critical care, etc.)
  • Strong procedural skills, including ultrasound-guided techniques
  • Competency in crisis management and teamwork in high-acuity situations

Professionalism & Work Ethic

  • Strong letters of recommendation
  • History of professionalism, reliability, and ethical behavior
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Research & Academic Contributions (if applicable)

  • Prior research experience in anesthesiology or related fields
  • Participation in clinical trials, quality improvement projects, or patient safety initiatives
  • Interest in pursuing academic anesthesiology
