Summer Research Scholars (SRS)

Program Description

SRS is an eight‐week program designed to help exceptionally well‐qualified undergraduate students gain valuable research experience in the College of Graduate Health Sciences. Students are matched with UTHSC faculty and spend the eight weeks learning about real‐world research protocols, enhancing biomedical information and retrieval skills, and designing scientific abstracts, among other things. The program culminates with presentations by the students based on the research they worked on during the summer.

Program Overview

Students gain hands-on research experience in UTHSC’s dynamic research laboratories with the goal of introducing them to graduate education the biomedical sciences. 

  • Eight-week paid internship (June and July)
  • Enhance skills in biomedical information retrieval
  • Participation scientific presentation workshop
  • Participation in scientific abstract writing workshop
  • Strengthen communication skills in biomedical sciences
  • Research Opportunities are available in: Biomedical Engineering, Epidemiology, Health Outcomes and Policy Research, Integrated Biomedical Sciences, Nursing Science, and Pharmaceutical Sciences
Student Eligibility
  • Currently enrolled undergraduate students in an accredited institution of higher learning
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 in required science courses (official transcript required)
  • Previous research experience is preferred but not required
Prerequisite Course Requirements
  • Must have completed at least one semester of general biology and/or general chemistry prior to application.
Application
  • Application opens each year on the first of December
  • Application closes each year on the last day February
  • Documents required:
    • Two (2) letters of recommendation from college professors and/or previous research advisors
    • Official Transcript(s) from all previously attended Universities and/or Colleges
    • Personal Statement

  • Housing is provided to non-local residents, upon request.

  • I graduate in May. Am I eligible to participate if I have already obtained an undergraduate degree?
    • The Summer Research Scholars program welcomes all current undergraduate students and those who would have obtained their undergraduate degree no earlier than the month prior to the start of the program.

  • I am a current high school student with an interest in Biomedical Sciences. Am I eligible to participate?
    • At this time, the Summer Research Scholars program is only available to undergraduate students.

  • I do not live in Memphis, TN. Is there housing and transportation available?
    • Housing is available upon request and on an as needed basis for non-local applicants. Students approved for housing must provide their own transportation to and from the UTHSC campus and mentor’s laboratory/office.

  • My references have not received the link to complete the recommendation survey. What should I do?
    • Please send an email to shampto4@uthsc.edu with the name and email address of each reference and the link will be resent. If references continue to encounter issues receiving the link, please verify the contact information you provided in your application.

  • I listed the wrong reference. May I make changes?
    • Please send an email to shampto4@uthsc.edu with the name of the reference you would like to replace and the name, email, phone number and institution of the new reference.

  • Is research experience required to participate in the program?
    • While research experience is preferred, it is not required for participation.

  • I plan to work a job this summer. May I still participate in the Summer Research Scholars program?
    • SRS is a demanding program and it requires your full attention. We respectfully ask that you do not work or participate in other programs at the same time. The program hours are 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday (unless otherwise noted).
