Academic and Ambulatory Care Post-Doctoral Fellowship
About the Program
The UT Health Science Center College of Pharmacy Academic and Ambulatory Care Fellowship affords the opportunity to be immersed in all elements of academia, including teaching/precepting, patient care, research/scholarship, and service.
The fellows’ time is split between the college and the practice site. The practice site offers the ability to work with experienced pharmacist clinicians to provide high-level patient care within Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) in Memphis, Nashville, and Knoxville. Individuals completing the fellowship will be prepared for a clinical faculty position and be able to provide high-quality patient care with the tools to develop a financially sustainable service.
The fellow will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of teaching, including large and small classroom experiences, didactic lectures and active learning facilitation, interprofessional teaching, simulation, and experiential. The clinical practice experience is focused on primary care, sustainability, credentialing, and financial viability of pharmacy services.
Fellows will participate in research focused on the scholarship of teaching and learning and primary care pharmacist services and serve on college committees related to curriculum and assessment. Fellows are encouraged to enroll in UT Health Science Center Teaching and Learning Center programs or enroll in master’s level coursework.

Fellowship Objectives
- Demonstrate knowledge and competency in the curricular design, implementation, and oversight process.
- Design, implement, and deliver innovative educational content within the PharmD program
- Develop skills in teaching through a variety of classroom experiences (i.e. didactic lecturing, facilitating skills labs, and small group active-learning environments)
- Develop skills necessary for precepting Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) students on clinical rotations
- Demonstrate ability to synthesize information (quantitative/qualitative) and complete components of preliminary and final reports, including spreadsheets and analyses (if applicable)
- Develop research/scholarship skills through active engagement in research and presentation/ publication of scholarly works.
- Provide comprehensive medication management to ambulatory care patients following a consistent patient care process.
- Demonstrate practice management skills for an interprofessional ambulatory care setting.
- Exhibits a willingness to take on leadership and non-leadership roles and responsibilities
- Demonstrate ability to work independently and to collaborate in group settings
- Demonstrate ability to make timely and effective decisions as a leader
- Communicate information effectively using the appropriate level of judgment, accuracy, and courtesy with internal and external constituents
- Exhibits accuracy, attention to detail, consistency, and ability to meet multiple deadlines in all work efforts
Core Domains
The Fellowship is comprised of four core domains: teaching and assessment (20%), research and scholarship (10%), service (10%), and clinical practice (60%).
Teaching and Assessment (20%)
The fellow will gain experience with teaching and learning for all years of the curriculum, including:
- Small group teaching
- Facilitation of workshops and active learning experiences
- Large group lectures including experience with distance learning technology
- Experiential education
- Engage in curricular design, development, implementation, and assessment
- Complete at least one UTHSC Teaching and Learning medallion per year
- Other development opportunities
Research and Scholarship (10%)
- Dual emphasis on clinical research and the scholarship of teaching and learning
- Completion of at least one clinical and one educational research project per year
- Opportunity for collaborating on other research and scholarly projects
- Presentation of research at a conference(s)
- Participation in continuing education (CE) activities
Service (10%)
- Member of the College of Pharmacy Curriculum and Assessment Committees
- Participation in task forces and workgroups, as assigned
- Attend department, college faculty, and clinic meetings
- Attend state, regional, or national meetings
Clinical Practice (60%)
- Participate in clinical practice in the ambulatory care setting. (see each campus/site for specific details)
- Complete at least one medication use evaluation per year
- Complete at least one drug monograph per year
- Partake in scholarly activities such as journal clubs, topic discussions, and precepting students on rotation
- Develop and grow clinical practice management skills such as collaborative practice agreement management, billing and sustainability practices, and organization-wide clinical updates

- Anticoagulation
- Specialty (HIV/Hepatitis C)
- Population Health
- Engage in interprofessional clinical practice with medical, dental, and behavioral health staff

- Chronic disease management and collaborative practice
- Hypertension, Diabetes, and Anticoagulation clinics
- Four in house pharmacies that participate in the federal 340B program
- A new “clinic to home” comprehensive medication review (CMR) service

The Fellow will be assigned to a director at the clinical practice site who will supervise that part of the fellowship. The Fellow must be a graduate of an ACPE accredited college or school of pharmacy and eligible for pharmacist licensure in the state of Tennessee. Fellows must be licensed by October 1after starting the residency.

Additional Items to Consider
- Program Duration: 24 months (approximately July 1-June 30)
- Number of Positions: 3 (one each in Memphis, Knoxville and Nashville)
Each fellow will be paid a competitive stipend and will receive a benefits package. The start date will be July 1 but is flexible based on fellow availability. Applicants must note their preferred campus (Memphis, Knoxville, Nashville or no preference) within their application. The indicated campus cannot be guaranteed.
- Must meet all the requirements for employment at The University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center, which will include a background check.
- Must have a Doctor of Pharmacy degree by fellowship start date. A residency or post-graduate training experience is not required for acceptance into the program. Those with residency experience are encouraged to apply.
- Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, professionalism and leadership.
- Must be a graduate of a college of pharmacy accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) and shall be licensed or eligible for licensure in the state of Tennessee. The fellow will complete licensure requirements no later than October 1 following their start date.
- Must be enrolled in a health insurance plan at the UT Health Science Center or show proof of other health insurance coverage.
