Federal Entrance Counseling
What is Entrance Counseling?
Entrance counseling is a mandatory session for first-time federal student loan borrowers. It ensures
that students understand the responsibilities of borrowing before receiving their
loan funds.
Who Needs to Complete It?
First-time Federal Direct Loan borrowers (Subsidized, Unsubsidized, and Graduate PLUS
Loans).
Graduate or professional students taking out a Graduate PLUS Loan for the first time.
Schedule One-On-One Financial Aid Counseling
All first year students are required to schedule and complete one-on-one financial aid counseling with their counselor.
During this counseling session your will learn about the following:
- Managing your education expenses
- Your rights and responsibilities as a borrower
- Review of your award offer
- Other financial resources to consider to help pay for your education

Federal Exit Counseling
If you have ACCEPTED Federal Student Loans, and applied the funds toward the cost of tuition, you are required to have loan exit counseling before you graduate.
This session helps students understand their repayment responsibilities, available repayment plans, and how to avoid default.
Locate Loan Servicers
Loan servicers are (an) entity that collects payments on a federal student loan, responds to customer service inquiries, and performs other administrative tasks associated with maintaining a loan on behalf of a loan holder. A federal loan servicer is a loan servicer for the U.S. Department of Education.
Federal Loans Disputes
The Ombudsman Group is dedicated to helping resolve disputes related to the federal student aid programs, including Direct Loans, Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program loans, Perkins Loans, and grant programs.
