The Whole Slide Imaging System was purchased with funding provided by the Shared Instrumentation Grant, NCRR 1S10RR025665-01. Bright field slide imaging is performed by the ScanScope® XT from Aperio Inc. The XT offers single slide manual or 120 slide automatic scanning capabilities at either 20x or 40x. Fluorescent slide imaging is performed by the ScanScope® FL from Aperio Inc. The FL offers single slide manual or 5 slide automatic scanning capabilities at either 20x or 40x. 1x3" and 2x3" slides are supported by both scanners.

Spectrum is a web-based application that delivers an effective information management system for high resolution digital slides. With Spectrum, the scanned images can be associated with data, searched, organized into projects, lessons, or cases, viewed (using ImageScope), and analyzed. ImageScope, the viewing software offered by Aperio Inc, allows the user to navigate through a digital image, annotate the image, host teleconferences, and analyze the image.

The Analysis Software provided by Aperio Inc offers multiple algorithms, including cell and area quantification, microvessel analysis, color colocalization, TMA analysis, and membrane/nuclear analysis. Genie® (Aperio Inc), also included with the system, can be "taught" to recognize either a single or multiple particular features. Once "taught" the program can analyze selected images for the features without user input.
