Virtual Interviews

Our Neurology Residency will follow interview recommendations from the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM) when we begin interviewing in Fall 2023.  All interviews will be conducted virtually by our program -- not in person this year.

Instructions for Applicants (Revised)

We are pleased to announce that the ACGME Neurology Residency Review Committee (RRC) has granted Initial Accreditation Status for our Neurology Residency Program.  We have been approved to offer three positions at each level of training.

The length of our program is a total of four years, including a Preliminary Medicine PGY-1 year of training at our institution as well as three years in the actual Neurology Residency (beginning at the PGY-2 level of training).  We will be participating in the NRMP Main Match for 2025, seeking three Residents.  Your applications must be submitted via the AAMC ERAS system as we recruit this Fall 2024.  If you are interviewed by our program and wish to match with us, you will need to submit a rank list to the NRMP Main Match that would include our Neurology Program (NRMP Program # 1689180C0)

Applicants for our Neurology positions will need to apply to the Categorical Neurology Residency listed in AAMC ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) [ACGME Program #1804700002].  By submitting an application to this program, candidates are acknowledging that they understand that, if they match with us, they will be committing to a PGY-1 level of training in Preliminary Medicine at our institution beginning July 1, 2025, as well as the Neurology Residency (beginning at the PGY-2 level) as of July 1, 2026.  Candidates will not apply for the three Preliminary Medicine positions through our Internal Medicine Residency Program.  All three of those positions are designated for our Neurology Program and are not available to applicants at large.

The Preliminary Medicine track is not listed in 2025 ERAS nor is it listed in the NRMP Main Match for 2025.  Candidates should only apply to our Categorical Neurology Residency within ERAS.

We will begin reviewing applications in Mid-October 2024 and will continue through Mid-November.

Virtual interviews will be held in December 2024.

Candidate Requirements

  • Candidates must have passed either the USMLE Step 1, and Step 2 or the COMLEX Level 1 and Level 2 on the first attempt.
  • If you have already graduated from Medical School, graduation is preferred to be within the last three (3) years. If not, you must have worked in a clinical setting for at least 2 years in the last 5 years.
  • Candidates with multiple publications in peer-reviewed journals are strongly considered.
  • Candidates with US clinical experience are preferred if the applicant has already graduated from Medical School.
  • International Medical Graduates must have ECFMG certification, and must have a Permanent Resident Visa (Green Card) or be able to seek a J-1 Resident Visa through the ECFMG and US Immigrations.  Our institution does not sponsor H-1B Visas for Resident or Fellow positions.

Once candidates have matched with our program, they are required to pass a criminal background check as well as drug screen and physical examination before they are allowed to start working within our University of Tennessee College of Medicine - Chattanooga Graduate Medical Education Programs.

Note:  The Neurology Residency Program will not offer any observing experience or "externship."  Senior U.S. Allopathic and Osteopathic students, as well as international medical students in their final year of medical school, are able to apply for clinical visiting student rotations via the AAMC Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) system.  We do not offer observing or clinical experiences for individuals who have already graduated from medical (or osteopathic) school.
