Resident QI | Research Training
As part of residency education, UT Health Science Center offers two unique programs for resident physicians in primary care disciplines wanting to pursue careers in academic medicine, quality improvement, or health system leadership. With these advanced training options, we want to drive innovation, quality improvement, and health system transformation while advancing the practice of primary care.

The Health Care Quality Scholars program provides advanced training in quality improvement and applied research during residency after the PGY-1 year. Scholars will participate in the program for at least one year during which their schedules will be adjusted to help accommodate the Scholars program requirements. Residents must apply and be accepted to both the Health Care Quality Scholars Program and the certificate program of their choice and must meet the full requirements of their selected academic program. Scholars may also participate in advanced Lean Six Sigma and/or motivational interviewing training and certification.

The Health Outcomes Research Scholars program begins in the last year of residency (i.e., PGY-3 or PGY-4) and extends residency for an additional year. Scholars participate in the program for two years, and their schedules will be adjusted to help accommodate the Scholars program requirements. Residents must apply and be accepted to both the Health Outcomes Research Scholars Program and the graduate program of their choice and must meet the full requirements of their selected academic program. Scholars may also participate in advanced Lean Six Sigma and/or motivational interviewing training and certification.
Health Outcomes Research Scholars will:
- Complete a research-focused master’s degree in one of the following:
- Pursue a mentored QI research project (overseen by selected master’s program committee)
- Prepare at least one manuscript ready for submission (reviewed by selected master’s program committee)
* Tuition waiver is possible but requires enrolling in 9 credit hours per semester and 10-15 hours per week of supervised research related to an ongoing departmental research (to be decided by the graduate program director). Students must remain in good standing in the College of Graduate Health Sciences to be offered a renewal of the tuition waiver from semester to semester at the program’s discretion and subject to the Dean’s approval.
