FAQs
What is the benefit of being a Health Care Scholar of a Health Outcomes Quality Scholar?
If you are interested in a career as a researcher-clinician and/or an administrator,
these programs will provide you with important research experience and guidance, a
submitted (and hopefully accepted) publication for your CV, and graduate courses specific
to quality improvement.
Do I get time out of clinical responsibilities to do the work?
Yes. The Residency Program Directors plan to reduce time on wards so that time can
be dedicated to research and coursework.
Is being a Health Outcomes Quality Scholar the same as being a Chief Resident?
It's similar, in that you have an extra year of residency, but different in that you
don't have administrative duties. This track is for those Resident Physicians who
are heading toward a career that involves both clinical duties and research responsibilities.
The experience that you will acquire both in the active research and in the coursework
will serve you well throughout your career.
I've heard that if I'm a Health Outcomes Quality Scholar, I can get into a sub-specialty
Internal Medicine residency. True?
Dr. Rob Bradsher is working toward that goal.
How many residents can participate in each program?
For the Health Care Quality Scholars program, the capacity depends on the number of Resident Physicians that each program can support as well as the capacity of the classes for the certificates. For the 2020-21 academic year, the number will be 1 or 2 from specific residency programs.
The number of Health Outcomes Research Scholars is dependent on funding for the positions.
Who pays for the tuition?
The Office of Graduate Medical Education will pay for tuition for the certificate
courses for academic years 2021 and 2022. In order not to incur tuition costs for
the master's programs, you will need to qualify for and obtain a tuition waiver.
If I want to enroll in one of the University of Memphis program, do I have to apply?
We will have a MoU (memorandum of understanding) with the University of Memphis so
that applying to the University will not be necessary. You will have to apply to the
specific program.
Are the certificate and master's programs online?
All of the University of Memphis offerings are online. The UTHSC certificates are
online, but the M.S. in Epidemiology is not completely online yet.
How do I apply?
There will be two applications needed. The first would be via your residency program.
The second would require application to the specific certificate or master's program.
Your becoming a Health Quality Scholar or a Health Outcomes Research Scholar will
depend on acceptance to both.
