  • About 400 percutaneous interventions/ per fellow are performed at the teaching sites.

  • The UTHSC training program is one of the highest volume, ST-elevation MI programs in the country. It provides primary PCI for patients throughout a 3 state area.

  • Procedures of varying complexity are taught from non-high risk PCI to advanced and complex high risk coronary intervention with percutaneous ventricular assist device (Impella) back up.

  • All facilities within Methodist Le Bonheur health care system use state-of-the-art equipment and techniques, including flat-panel imaging, intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), fractional flow reserve (FFR), intracardiac echo (ICE), aspiration thrombectomy, rheolytic thrombectomy, intra-aortic balloon pump placement (IABP), as well as "niche" techniques, such as rotational and coronary orbital (CSI) atherectomy, IMPELLA cardiac support devices and transcutaneous aortic valve replacement (TAVR).

  • About 150-200 peripheral angiograms and interventions/ per fellow. Peripheral vascular disease training is an integral part of the fellowship program. Peripheral interventions range from iliac to infra-popliteal disease with use of orbital and directional atherectomy techniques. Critical limb ischemia treatment and limb salvages are routine procedures in our lab.

  • Towards the last part of the training, the interventional fellow is expected to perform as primary operator of PCI procedures and peripheral interventions.
