Daniel Maluf, MD

Professor of Surgery Director of Liver Transplantation Director, Living Donor Transplantation
Endowed Chair in Liver Transplantation

Dr. Maluf is a scientist-transplant surgeon with more than 17 years of experience in solid organ transplantation (kidney, liver, and pancreas) and Transplant omics research. He serves as the Director of Liver Transplantation at University of Tennessee. He has been involved in several NIH funded projects and clinical trials in studies in genomics and proteomics related to liver and kidney transplantation. He served as the PI of the 1R21DK100678-01A1 “Molecular biomarkers associated with calcineurin inhibitor mediated kidney injury”, a translational study evaluating pathogenesis and molecular pathways associated with CNI toxicity post-kidney transplantation. His has expertise in liver transplantation, ischemia reperfusion injury, hepatocellular carcinoma, transplant immunology and molecular biology. His research projects focus on: (1) molecular mechanisms associated with ischemia reperfusion injury in liver and kidney transplantation (2) DNA methylation patterns associated to liver and kidney transplantation, (3) evaluation of molecular and methylation changes associated to hepatocellular carcinoma development in patients waiting for a liver transplantation (4) evaluate the molecular pathways that associate with graft fibrosis development and loss of function post-kidney transplantation, and (5) molecular biomarkers associated with calcineurin inhibitor mediated kidney injury in solid organ transplantation.
