Amandeep Bajwa, PhD
Assistant Professor

Dr. Bajwa began her research evaluating the role of Sphingosine 1 Phosphate receptors (S1PRs) in a mouse ischemic reperfusion injury (IRI) model of acute kidney injury (AKI). She has identified that in response to a higher copy number of S1P1 receptors (S1pr1) in epithelial cells the induction of mitochondria biogenesis. Induction of mitochondria biogenesis in epithelial cells made them more resistant to cisplatin induced cell death. Based on the earlier studies, she has hypothesized that a higher copy number of healthy mitochondria could, through some currently unknown mechanism, induce resistance to inflammatory or ischemic injury. This work has influenced her current interest in mitochondrial therapy for kidney and liver injury.
