Transplant Research Institute (TRI)
Implementing Systems Biology as a Pathway to Precision Transplant Medicine.
Located at the University of Tennessee Health and Science Center (UTHSC) in Memphis,
TN, the Transplant Research Institute is situated in the Translational Research Building,
a two-year old building that houses 80 researchers, 150 staff members and the equivalent
of 78 typical 500-square-foot labs.
The Transplant Research Transplant laboratory is located on the fourth floor and holds
the equipment required for performing RNA, DNA, and protein isolations, as well as quantitation
of gene expression using real-time PCR and microarray assays. Equipment includes Agilent
2100 Genetic Analyzer, Applied Biosystems 7500 Fast Real-Time PCR System, NanoDrop 2000
(Thermo Scientific), Qubit, refrigerated centrifuges, ultracentrifuges, -20ºC and
-80 ºC freezers, among others. Moreover, most of the Core facilities are in the same
floor and/or same building allowing access to common instrumentation.
There are three offices in the laboratory, assuring direct supervision by the PI and strong interaction within the team. Dr. Mas and her team assistant professors, post-docs, and lab technicians are trained for using all the major equipment requested for the proposed research. Dr. Mas’ team perform and evaluate every step of all the reactions and assays that are part of the current project.
The Transplant Research Institute partners with the UT/Methodist University Hospital
Transplant Institute. UT/Methodist University Hospital is the largest, most comprehensive
hospital in the Methodist Healthcare system. It is a 617-bed facility located in the
heart of the Memphis Medical Center. As the major academic campus and principal teaching
hospital of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, this partnership allows
for research, medicine and innovation. This partnership supports multidisciplinary
collaboration among doctors and clinical team.
The Transplant Research Institute hosts monthly research meetings. The monthly meetings
represent the commitment of surgeons, physicians, and researchers to learn through
a multidisciplinary approach. Presentations are given by a variety of guests as well
as from members of the Transplant Institute and Transplant Research Institute.
In April 2019, The Transplant Institute will make an exciting move to the most-advanced, state of the art building. This new 450,000 square-foot expansion will be home to all transplant services. This is a $275,000,000 investment to the future of outstanding healthcare. The Transplant Outpatient Clinic and the Center for Advanced Liver Diseases, 3 operating rooms designated for transplants, and 36 patient beds will be the heart of this move.
The Transplant Institute is nationally recognized for its success with kidney, liver, kidney-pancreas and pancreas transplants, Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute in Memphis, Tennessee, has been a leader in the field for more than 40 years. The program offers hope to patients with conditions such as kidney failure and end-stage liver diseases such as cirrhosis, Hepatitis C and diabetes. Together, the Transplant Research Institute and the Transplant Institute will shape the future of healthcare today.
