Dr. Gayle Minard – Faculty Advisor
Dr. Minard received her medical degree from the University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine. Her graduate studies include a medical internship at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, OH, a surgery internship and residency at Mercy Catholic Medical Center in Upper Darby, PA, and a trauma fellowship at UT. Dr. Minard is boarded in general surgery and surgical critical care, and is an attending on the trauma service at the Elvis Presley Memorial Trauma Center. She is a member of the Nutrition Support Teams at both the VA Hospital and the MED.
She is the SICU director and staffs general surgery at the Memphis VA. In addition, she performs surgical endoscopy at the VA and the Med.
Dr. Martin Fleming – Division Chief, Surgical Oncology
Dr. Martin Fleming is the Chief of Surgical Oncology and Associate Professor of Surgery. He earned his medical degree here in Memphis and completed his general surgery residency at University of Texas - Southwestern in Dallas, followed by a fellowship in surgical oncology at the Medical College of Virginia. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. David Shibata – Department of Surgery Chair
David Shibata, MD, FACS, FASCRS, is Scheinberg Endowed Chair in Surgery, Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.Before assuming his current role at UTHSC, Dr. Shibata was Professor of Surgery and Oncology at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine, as well as Senior Member and Chief of the Section of Colorectal Oncology at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute in Tampa. With more than 24 years of experience, Dr. Shibata has held academic appointments at several world-renowned institutions including Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, where he completed his residency in General Surgery and a research fellowship in Cancer Biology; Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, New York, where he completed a clinical fellowship in Surgical Oncology; and the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, where he was Assistant Professor of Surgery.
