Health Fee and Insurance Coverage

Mandatory Health Fee

The mandatory health fee assures the availability of high quality health care services on campus for UTHSC students. The mandatory health fee provides access to visits with physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and registered nurses at University Health Services (UHS); evaluation, counseling and referral services with mental health professionals at the UHS; the availability of a physician and a mental health professional on-call when the offices are closed; health promotion programs and services; and public health surveillance care and services provided by UHS.


In addition to the mandatory health fee, all UTHSC students must have health insurance coverage for visits to UHS, specialists, hospitalizations, surgical procedures, diagnostic laboratory tests and x-rays, immunizations, physical therapy, and prescription medications. These services are not covered by the mandatory health fee.

Services provided at UHS not covered by insurance are subject to an out of pocket expense. You will be responsible for your deductible, co-insurance, or out of pocket expenses if applicable.

You can enroll in the UTHSC Student Health Insurance Plan (United Healthcare Student Resources), or you can waive the health insurance if your insurance plan meets University insurance criteria. Every year you must complete the online insurance process to enroll or waive. Requests to waive the UTHSC Student Health Insurance Plan (UHCSR) may be audited to assure compliance with University insurance criteria. If you choose to remain on your own health insurance plan, you are financially responsible for expenses not covered by your insurance plan.
