Adult Psychiatry

UT Adult Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic/University Clinical Health

UT Psychiatry helps adults deal with emotional and social problems ranging from depression to eating disorders and schizophrenia. While much is still to be learned about these conditions, researchers now know that many of them are caused by biological, social or environmental factors. Fortunately, most of these illnesses can be treated effectively with psychotherapy and/or medication. University Clinical Health’s interdisciplinary team of board-certified psychiatrists and licensed psychologists offer personalized, compassionate care that focuses on improving quality of life for patients. This clinic is also a training site for medical students, psychiatry residents, and psychiatric fellows. We work with patients to help them understand their problems, acquire long-term coping skills and manage situations independently after they leave our care.

Addiction Recovery Clinic

The Addiction Recovery Clinic offers outpatient care for people with opioid, alcohol and other substance use disorders. Our psychiatrists, trainees, and other care team members have a respectful and compassionate approach to treating addiction and substance use disorders as medical illnesses. In addition to physician provided services, our clinic offers counseling and case management services. We work closely with patients to develop an individualized approach and base our treatments on evidence-based guidelines for the treatment of addiction and substance use disorders. We encourage counseling, peer support groups (such as 12 Step approaches), and medication treatment when needed. We offer buprenorphine treatment for opioid use, naltrexone for alcohol use, and other medications as indicated. We also offer referral options to community resources to help patients and their families struggling with the consequences of addiction.

Depression Clinic

The UT Psychiatry Depression Program is in the early phases of development with the goal of becoming a Center of Excellence and member of the National Network of Depression Centers. The clinical assessment and treatment arm of the UTHSC Psychiatry Depression Program is a component of the UCH outpatient clinic structure. UTHSC psychiatrists assess and treat patients at two physical clinical sites in eastern Memphis and in the Medical Center and can conduct telehealth visits from patients residing anywhere within the state of Tennessee. Developmental plans for the program include the development and expansion of counseling services for individuals and families and the addition of neuromodulatory treatments such as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). The program has an emphasis on integrative assessment and treatment of depression, to include nutrition, physical activity, chronotherapy, endocrine aspects, other metabolic aspects including inflammation and microbiome, and additional social and structural determinants of health.

Geriatric Psychiatry Clinic

The Geriatric Psychiatry Clinic offers a full range of outpatient psychiatric treatment to older individuals across a broad range of psychiatric conditions. Patients seen and treated in this clinic are age 65 and older. We work closely with a patient’s primary physician to tailor psychiatric treatment in the context of the patient’s overall medical condition.

Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Clinic

Our program works with the patient to diagnose and treat a disorder that affects approximately 4% of the adult population in America. At our downtown clinic at 920 Madison Avenue, we use a mix of computer testing and medical examination by a physician to diagnose adults who may be suffering from ADHD. The disorder itself is complex, and at UTHSC we want to ensure we get the right diagnosis for the patient. We also offer follow-up appointments for ongoing treatment. If you feel you or someone you know is suffering from ADHD, call our clinic and ask about the Adult ADHD program. We do not provide testing or treatment for those under 18 years of age at this clinic.
