Department of Physiology

The UTHSC Department of Physiology leverages wide-ranging expertise to develop new collaborative research programs and promote outstanding team-based science.

The Department of Physiology is recognized locally, nationally, and internationally for providing exceptional research, exceptional education, and distinguished service to students, collaborators, fellow scientists, and the larger community outside UTHSC. Our faculty are recognized research leaders in the fields of cardiology, nephrology, neurology, gastroenterology, pulmonology, oncology, and neonatology.

Physiology faculty also serve on the editorial boards of many prestigious journals, as members of NIH Study Sections, and as part of organizing committees of numerous national and international meetings. Recent departmental graduates have taken postdoctoral positions in top research institutions including Yale, Scripps Research Institute, and Harvard, while our postdoctoral fellows have gone on to be successfully placed in faculty positions or careers in government or private sectors including Fortune 500 companies such as Pfizer, Merck-Serono & Co., and others.

UTHSC Department of Physiology - ranked number one in research dollars per faculty by the ACDP in 2018.

16 professors, 17 postdocs, 4 Endowed Chairs, and 4 Distinguished Professors Emeritus.
33 grants awarded, including 23 NIH RO1s, 4 R21s, 1 U01, and 2 R56s. Total of nearly $13 million in direct costs awarded in 2020.
