Our History
The Neuroscience Institute at UT Health Sciences was built on a simple but powerful idea: understanding the brain requires collaboration across disciplines. Much of the recent progress in neuroscience can be attributed to the multidisciplinary effort now being used to understand brain function and its disorders.
In 1985, this vision was formalized when leaders at The University of Tennessee established a multidisciplinary neuroscience program within the College of Medicine. Bringing together faculty from across basic science and clinical departments, the program created a shared environment designed to accelerate research and strengthen training in neuroscience.
That commitment to collaboration and excellence was soon recognized at the state level, when the State of Tennessee established the Neuroscience Center of Excellence. The Center has since been selected by the governor and legislature to receive special funding from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission. This designation provided critical investment in faculty recruitment, graduate and postdoctoral training, laboratory space, and advanced research infrastructure.
Over the decades, the program has grown significantly in numbers of faculty and students, research space and equipment, and external funding. Today, the Neuroscience Institute at UT Health Sciences is recognized for its depth of expertise, strong collaborative culture, and sustained research productivity.
Looking forward, the NI continues to build on this foundation by embracing new technologies, expanding interdisciplinary partnerships, and accelerating the translation of discovery into meaningful advances in brain health. As neuroscience enters an era of unprecedented opportunity and growth, the Institute is positioned not only to contribute to the future of the field, but to help define it.
