Application Process
We offer a four-year program with a joint agreement with Baptist Desoto Hospital for PGY 1 transitional residency followed by three years of neurology. A separate application to the NRMP for the transitional PGY1 year is not required for our program.

- How do I apply to your program?
Please apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and register for the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
- When is the application deadline?
Our application deadline is December 31st but we encourage applicants to apply as early as possible.
- Does your program include the preliminary year?
The Adult Neurology Residency Program at UTHSC is a four-year joint agreement with Baptist DeSoto for a transitional year program in neurology that includes a preliminary (PGY-1) transitional year training. A separate application to the NRMP for the transitional PGY1 year is not required for our program.
- How many letters of recommendation should I have?
We require three letters of recommendation, but you are welcome to submit four.
- Do I have to submit a letter from a neurologist?
At least one letter should be from a neurologist.
- Do I have to provide a letter from a chairperson?
It is not required, we recommend the letters you provide are from people who know you well and can speak about you.
- When are interviews scheduled?
Interviews are scheduled each week between October and January
- Do you have a cut-off for year of graduation from medical school?
No. However, we prefer candidates’ graduation from Medical School to be within the last three (3) years. If not, you must have worked in a clinical setting for at least 2 years in the last 5 years.
For Foreign Medical Graduates
- Do you accept foreign medical graduates?
Yes. We have a strong history of training foreign medical graduates in our program. We have residents from different nationalities, we are proud of our program’s diversity.
- Do you require US clinical experience?
Candidates with US clinical experience is preferred.
- Do you provide visas for foreign medical graduates?
Yes, we provide J1 visas for applicants who match with us.

How to Apply
- To apply to the program, visit the ERAS website.
- All appointments are made through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Candidates must register through the NRMP website.
- Applicants considered for a residency will be invited for a personal interview with the program director and selected faculty. Most interviews are conducted from October through January each year.
- The application deadline is December 31st.
