Neurocritical Care Division

The Division of Neurocritical Care of the Department of Neurology at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center is dedicated to the care of adult patients with acute neurologic illness. 

The NICU team staffs the 16 Bed Neurocritical Care Unit at Methodist University Hospital which is a certified comprehensive stroke center in the heart of the stroke belt. It is also a regional referral center for complex spinal and cranial neurosurgery and Neurointerventional Surgery.

Our team is multidisciplinary collaboration. Our physicians are a superb group of five board certified Neurologists who have specialized fellowship training and board certification in Neurocritical Care. The team also has a dedicated group of acute care neurocritical care nurse practitioners and a critical care pharmacists who round every day with our physicians. The bedside nurses who staff the NICU  and are at the bedside every hour of every day are the backbone of our team.

The NICU team partners with the University of Tennessee Neurosurgery and Neurointerventional teams to admit and consults on patients from throughout the mid-south with a variety of neurologic illness including ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, brain tumors, brain aneurysms, vascular malformations, traumatic brain injury, seizures, brain and spinal infections, and neuromuscular emergencies. The unit is equipped with advanced, state-of-the-art neuromonitoring including transcranial doppler, continuous video EEG, and intracranial pressure monitors.

Our team is actively engaged in academic neurocritical care and we are dedicated to train the next generation of Neurocritical Care physicians. Our division offers the only ACGME accredited fellowship in the state of Tennessee in neurocritical care. In addition, our division is committed to advancing the science of Neurocritical Care and has published widely and is actively engaged in numerous clinical trials.
