Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students,

The National Weather Service has released important information regarding extreme changes in weather conditions in Memphis and the Mid-South.

A strong low-pressure system will approach the Mid-South on Friday, bringing the chance for severe storms in the early morning hours.

What you need to know:

Thursday – Friday: The powerful storm system tracking through the region will produce very strong gradient winds with gusts over 50 mph. The main concerns will be damaging winds and large hail.

Saturday – Monday: This arctic front will then push into the area. An upper-level disturbance will track across the area late Sunday into Monday.

• 40-70% chance of at least two inches of snow along and north of I-40.
• Wind chills will dip below zero degrees in some areas as early as Monday morning.

Tuesday morning will be the coldest with lows around 0° and wind chills well below zero. Please take appropriate precautions. 

Please assist us with the following to ensure workspaces remain comfortable and safe:

• Close any open windows and refrain from leaving exterior building doors open to prevent building temperatures from dropping and causing issues.
• Remind others that opening windows is highly discouraged and could lead to building-wide problems.
• Leave interior and cabinet doors open where possible to allow for better air circulation.

Safety Tips:

• Remember to check and protect people, pets, and plants.
• Secure loose outdoor items now.
• Due to high winds, be aware of the potential for flying or falling debris, especially tree branches, limbs, and overhead power lines.
• Be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions.
• Listen for additional statements and possible warnings through television, radio, social media, and weather apps.

Monday, January 15, is a campus holiday closing, but Tuesday, January 16, should be business as usual if conditions permit. We will closely monitor weather conditions over the weekend and submit additional information as needed.

For the latest information, faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to visit the University website at uthsc.edu, and look for messages via UTHSC Alert, our emergency mass messaging system for campus closures.

Essential services, which include Campus Police and physical plant operations, will be on-site.
