Residency Training
As part of residency education, UTHSC offers two unique tracks for primary care medical doctors wanting to pursue a career in academic medicine. We want to drive innovation, quality improvement, and health system transformation while advancing the practice of Primary Care.

Health Care Quality Scholars
The Health Care Quality Scholars program is designed for Resident Physicians who want to get advanced training in Quality Improvement/Research. As Health Care Quality Scholars, qualifying residents will participate in the following activities in their last two years of residency:
- Completion of research-related Graduate Certificate
- Health Care Quality Improvement Certificate Program - 12 hrs (UTHSC) OR
- Certificate in Clinical Investigation - 12 hrs (UTHSC) OR
- Certificate in Population Health - 15 hrs (University of Memphis) OR
- Certificate in Health Systems Leadership - 12 hrs (University of Memphis)
- Mentored QI research project
- One or more manuscripts submitted for publication
Scholars will have opportunities to participate in research and community health improvement activities, some of which can be focused on:
- Health disparities
- Social determinants of health
- The "Everyone has a Provider" Initiative
There will also be an option for advanced training/certification in Lean Six Sigma or motivational interviewing/health behavioral counseling.
Health Outcomes Research Scholars
The Health Outcomes Research Scholars program is designed for Primary Care Resident Physicians who want to extend their PGY 3/4 clinical experiences over two years. These Scholars will receive protected time for advanced training in health outcomes research. As Health Outcomes Research Scholars, qualifying residents will generally participate in the following activities in their last two years of residency:
- Advanced health outcomes research training through one of the following accredited
master’s degree programs:
- M.S. in Health Outcomes and Policy Research (tuition waived if taking 9 or more hours/semester)
- M.S. in Epidemiology (tuition waived if taking 9 or more hours/semester)
- M.P.H.at University of Memphis (tuition required)
- Mentored health outcomes research project
- One or more publications accepted
Scholars have opportunities to participate in research and community health improvement activities, including:
