Scholarship Information

The UT Health Science Center College of Nursing has many student scholarships (listed below) that are available based on academic ability and/or financial need. Scholarships are awarded annually by the College of Nursing  Awards and Honors Committee; externally funded scholarships are awarded according to grantee guidelines. 

Who is Eligible

Academic ability is determined by GPA (minimum 3.0), and financial need is determined by data generated from the Free Application for Student Financial Aid (FAFSA). To be eligible for scholarships, students must complete a FAFSA for the current academic year. Information how to complete the FAFSA can be found under the on the UTHSC Financial Aid page.

How to Apply

Once admitted to the nursing program, students will receive a link in their UTHSC email that enables them apply for scholarships. Scholarship Listing

The Absher Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Reba Goins Absher, a graduate of the Physician and Surgery Hospital Nursing School in Chattanooga. This fund provides financial aid to students preparing for a career in professional nursing or as an advanced practice nurse at the University of Tennessee.

The Mary Lee Banner King Scholarship was established in recognition of a 1956 graduate of the college who was a beloved wife, mother, and mentor who selflessly served her community, patients, family, and friends. Students who receive this scholarship will embody the same nurturing compassion, exceptional patient care, and devotion to health care for which she was known.

The Marie E. Buckley Scholarship was established in 1997 by the nursing class of 1962 to honor Marie Buckley, a Goodman Professor and Assistant Dean for Students at UT Health Science Center  College of Nursing. This fund provides support for students demonstrating scholastic ability and dedication to nursing as a career and profession.

The Dr. Judy Carbage-Martin Scholarship Fund was established to provide support to a student enrolled in the PhD in Nursing Science program. Dr Carbage-Martin is recognized as the first African-American student to earn a PhD in Nursing Science from a Tennessee University. She earned both her Master of Science in Nursing and her PhD in Nursing Science from the UT Health Science Center.  

The Elizabeth Club Scholarship, established in 1968 by the Women’s Club of Memphis, provides scholarships for two or more students enrolled in the College of Nursing who demonstrate academic ability and financial need, with preference given to residents of Tennessee.

The Bruno and Mary Carolyn DePalma Scholarship provides support for a student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing who demonstrates scholastic ability and financial need. 

The Dr. Dianne Greenhill Scholarship was created by friends of Dr. Greenhill and college alumni to honor her more than 40 years with the college. The scholarship provides support for a student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. 

The Andrew D. Holt Scholars Program memorializes UT’s former president Dr. Andy Holt for his efforts to build the University’s scholarship program during his 20-year association with the institution. The most prestigious scholarship awarded by the UT Alumni Association supports students with two or more years remaining in his/her curriculum and who have demonstrated academic merit and leadership skills. This two-year scholarship is awarded annually to one student in the amount of $2,500 per year for a total of $5,000.

The Susan Jacob Endowed Scholarship was established in 2019. This scholarship provides support for students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing who demonstrate scholastic ability and financial need. Strong consideration is given to students who have a desire to practice in community and/or public health, hospice, or palliative care.

The Dorothy McCarley Martin Scholarship was established by Mr. Dean Martin, of Franklin, TN, in memory of his wife Dorothy McCarley Martin, a 1956 graduate of the UTHSC College of Nursing. This scholarship provides support for deserving nursing students based on academic and financial need, with preference to students in their last year of studies.

The Brenda Mills Scholarship was established in 2006 by faculty and friends in memory of Brenda Mills, an educator at the College of Nursing and a flight nurse in the U.S. Air Force Air National Guard. This scholarship provides support for students demonstrating scholastic ability and financial need, with preference given to the previous year’s recipient.

The Ruth Neil Murry Endowed Scholarship was established in memory of the first Dean for the College of Nursing at UT Health Science Center. Dean Murry served the College and its students for more than 40 years.The scholarship provides support for a student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.

The Dr. Sylvia Anderson Price Scholarship provides financial support for students seeking a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at UT Health Science Center. Dr. Anderson Price was a College of Nursing professor who inspired a generation of students. 

The Roane County Scholarship was established in 1959 by the Roane County Medical Society for the purpose of providing medical and nursing scholarships to residents of Roane and Anderson counties based on financial need and scholastic merit.

The Chaundra Sanders Nursing Scholarship was established in 2012 to honor Chaundra Sanders, an outstanding student enrolled in UT Health Science Center's first Master’s Entry Clinical Nurse Leader class. This scholarship was funded in part by students, faculty, and friends, and the College of Nursing Practice enterprise to support students demonstrating scholastic ability and financial need.

The Patti Scott Endowed Scholarship was established by Dr. Patti Scott and her husband Dr. Jay Deshpande to build a future for nursing students pursuing careers in public health. The award is for a student seeking a doctorate in nursing who is committed to making a difference in his or her community.

The Frances Springall Scholarship was created in honor of Frances Reed Springall, a 1943 graduate of the College of Nursing who served as head nurse of the delivery floor of the historic John Gaston Hospital in Memphis. The total endowed funds for this scholarship provide the College’s first full BSN scholarship.

The Dr. Cheryl Cummings Stegbauer Scholarship is one of only two awards that provide full financial support for a student through the life of their academic program at the College of Nursing. The Dr. Cheryl Cummings Stegbauer Scholarship provides support for a student seeking a degree in advanced practice nursing.

The Ruby L. Stephenson Scholarship was established in 1955 to support students based on scholastic ability and dedication to nursing as a career and profession.

The Jim Stockdale Scholarship, established in 2011, provides support for students demonstrating academic scholastic ability and financial need, with preference given to the previous year’s recipient. This endowment, started by players and friends, honors 36 years of volunteer service by Coach Stockdale. Under his leadership, the College of Nursing basketball team won 15 league championships and won the Cotton States Invitational Nurses Tournament a record eight times.

The Esther Jean Trentham Scholarship supports nursing students in good academic standing with financial need.

The University of Tennessee Alumni Association (UTAA) Legacy Scholarship, created in 2013 by the UTAA, supports students whose parents or grandparents received a degree from the University of Tennessee. The $1,000 UTAA Legacy Scholarship for the College of Nursing is awarded once in a three- year period to one first-year legacy student with an admission GPA of 3.0 or greater.

The Dr. Peggy Ingram Veeser Endowed Scholarship was established to honor Dr. Veeser, her work,  and her dedication to nursing students while at UT Health Science Center. The scholarship provides support to a student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. 

The Grace Spice Wallace Scholarship was established in 1996 by friends, students, and colleagues. Ms. Wallace served the college in many capacities from 1949-1976 including Assistant Director of Nursing Education, Assistant to the Dean, Associate Professor, and Coordinator of Basic Sciences in the UT Health Science Center College of Nursing. This scholarship provides support for students based on scholastic ability and dedication to nursing as a career and profession.

The Dr. Melody Waller Endowed Scholarship was established in 2022 to honor the memory of a faculty member and rising nurse leader who passed away in 2022. The scholarship was established to support a Bachelor of Science in Nursing student.

The Frances Wright Washburn Scholarship, established in 1961 by her sister, Mrs. Vivian Chaffin, supports nursing students in good academic standing with financial need.

The Virginia C. Wilson Scholarship provides support for students demonstrating scholastic ability and financial need, with preference given to the previous year’s recipient. Mrs. Wilson was a 1954 graduate of the College of Nursing. Her husband, Dr. Creighton Wilson, a graduate of the UTHSC College of Medicine, established this endowment in her honor, knowing that she would be proud to assist future nursing students in their education. 

The Divionis Worton Scholarship Fund was created in 1954 to help nursing students receive the education they need to better serve the community. This is one of the oldest scholarships in the college.

The Faculty Minority Scholarship was established by faculty of the UTSHC College of Nursing in 1988. This scholarship provides support for minority students demonstrating scholastic ability, financial need, and dedication to the health sciences as a career and profession.

The Chancellor’s Diversity Scholarship provides support for diverse students demonstrating academic ability and financial need, with preference given to residents of Tennessee.
