Training

We have a robust program to support research training at all levels.

Faculty

Our faculty have regular faculty-development seminars that include instructional assistance in achieving academic, publishing, and grant-writing goals. We have weekly open departmental research meetings to connect faculty with the necessary logistical, statistical, and research design support to enable to them to conduct their research and follow up participant recruitment goals. All faculty members are available to assist learners with their projects.

Fellows

Our fellows have the opportunity to engage in weekly meetings and mentorship to support their ongoing research projects. Gynecologic Oncology fellows have one year of continuous protected research time during which they can access the infrastructural support necessary to get a project initiated: from design, to Institutional Review Board approval, to implementation. Maternal Fetal Medicine fellows have similar access to all avenues of assistance. They have a required research thesis that is defended during their third year of fellowship, as well as protected time to plan and execute their project.

Residents

Our residents have protected blocks in their PGY2 and PGY3 years for research, with the flexibility to pick one or more faculty mentors to assist them with investigational, quality improvement, or educational research goals. A research curriculum has been designed with a suggested timeline that guide them. Each resident is required to present a culminating project in April of their PGY-3 year at the Department’s Annual Bradford Kincheloe Visiting Professor Lecture and Resident Research Forum. Papers are presented by each resident to the Department members, friends and family, and a distinguished visiting professor. Residents prepare a manuscript as well and receive support for submission for publication.

Medical Students

Our medical students have multiple opportunities to get involved in faculty, fellow, and resident-led research efforts. Motivated medical students have also successfully led and completed their own research projects through various avenues, including the summer-long intensive Medical Student Research Fellowship for students between their first and second years of medical school, and a Junior Internship in OB-GYN Research. Medical students are welcome to join in our open departmental research meetings and once vetted to join specific projects, are allowed to engage in clinical research activities such as patient recruitment and data collection.

Nurse midwives and Nurses

Our nurse midwives and nurses have consistently conducted top-notch quality improvement and patient education projects that have elevated the level of clinical care that we provide as a department. Projects include Save Your Life post-birth warning signs to increase awareness of dangerous signs and symptoms in the postpartum period, and TeamBirth initiatives to maximize patient involvement in their birthing care plans.
