The goal of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship program at UTHSC is to develop clinician-scientists who are prepared to conduct research, teach, and provide high-quality sub-specialty care.  Our three-year program is ACMGE-accredited and based within the UTHSC College of Medicine's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Regional One Health hospital, and Le Bonheur Children's Hospital Fetal Center. This tertiary center serves an area that includes Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Missouri.

Unique Opportunities

The large referral area provides unique opportunities for our fellows. Our high frequency of medical complications of pregnancy allows for an enhanced experience for fellows.  The MFM faculty members are expert in managing complications, including hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, diabetes, sickle cell disease, and other high-risk conditions. The team includes expert sonographers, a complex Family Planning-trained MFM faculty member, as well as diabetic educators, a board-certified geneticist and a genetic counselor. The referral base has a heavy load of fetal anomalies; the Fetal Center clinic is dedicated to sonography, counseling, and planning. When patients require ventilatory support during their pregnancy, they are transferred to the intensive care unit, and MFM fellows co-manage with other sub-specialists. This allows the fellows to acquire a deep breadth and depth of clinical experiences for the management of these complicated pregnancies. Finally, we are a regional referral center for management of morbidly adherent placental disorders. For these and for other complex obstetrical cases, a specialized team approach (in which the fellows play an important role) is applied, from planning to surgery.
