Resident Life

Life as a Memphis Family Medicine resident blends rigorous clinical training with a supportive, close‑knit community that genuinely looks out for one another. Our residents learn, grow, and thrive in an environment that values balance, wellness, and meaningful connection — both inside and outside the hospital.

A Supportive, Collaborative Culture

Residents describe our program as a place where people show up for each other. Attendings are approachable, senior residents mentor juniors, and the entire team works together to create a culture where learning feels safe and encouragement is the norm. Whether you’re tackling a challenging case or celebrating a milestone, you’re surrounded by colleagues who want to see you succeed.

Life in Memphis

Memphis offers the perfect backdrop for residency — affordable living, vibrant neighborhoods, and a rich cultural scene. Residents enjoy exploring local restaurants, outdoor spaces, live music, and the city’s deep history. Many choose to stay in the area after graduation because they’ve built strong roots here.

Wellness and Work–Life Balance

We believe that well‑being is essential to excellent patient care. Residents have access to wellness resources, protected time for personal appointments, and a program culture that encourages taking care of yourself. Informal gatherings, group outings, and spontaneous coffee runs help keep the days grounded and connected.

Celebrations and Traditions

From intern welcome events to graduation dinners, the program makes space to celebrate achievements and milestones. Residents often gather for potlucks, holiday events, and weekend adventures around the city. These shared experiences strengthen the sense of community that defines our program.

Building Lifelong Connections

The relationships formed here extend far beyond residency. Alumni frequently return to teach, mentor, or collaborate, and many remain part of the Memphis medical community. Residents leave the program with not only strong clinical skills but also friendships and professional networks that last a lifetime.
