NIH Medical Student Research Fellowship Program

Welcome! You have reached the home page of the NIH Medical Student Research Fellowship Program (MSRF) at the College of Medicine of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. The Program enables UT medical students, selected on a competitive basis, to engage in individualized research projects under the supervision of College of Medicine faculty investigators in both basic science and clinical science departments during the summer or off-quarters. Over 500 medical students have participated in the MSRF Program since its inception in 1980. Currently supported by a five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health, the Program provides stipends of $1,731 per month with a maximum stipend of $5,193 for a three-month appointment. Fellowship stipends are available for 24 students per year.

The MSRF Program introduces students to biomedical research and to careers in academic medicine, and provides an excellent opportunity for professional and academic growth. An article about the MSRF Program entitled Impact of Medical Student Research in the Development of Physician-Scientists has recently been published in the Journal of Investigative Medicine (May 2003).
