IPE Activity Repository

The purpose of this page is to index and develop a repository of the existing interprofessional education (IPE) activities led by faculty, staff, and/or students at UTHSC. 

This information may be used to:

  • Facilitate partnerships and other opportunities for programs to collaborate.
  • Promote awareness of existing IPE opportunities within UTHSC.
  • Provide relevant information needed for educational program accreditation.

Art of Consultation and Interprofessional Collaboration: Opioid Prescribing Students work as a team through two patient cases around opioid prescribing and recommendations to determine the best course of therapy. The session concludes with a debriefing.

Foundations of Interprofessional Practice & Multidisciplinary Panel Discussion Students are provided with an overview of interprofessional education and interprofessional collaborative practice, including the improvements in healthcare that are possible using this approach. A panel of professionals representing a wide array of healthcare professionals (e.g., medicine, psychology, social work, dentistry, OT, PT, nursing and physician assistant) describe their role as part of a healthcare team and answer questions from the student audience. Negotiation and Conflict Resolution in Interdisciplinary Settings  As a component of the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) program curriculum, students complete the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument to learn about their degree of assertiveness and cooperativeness in conflict situations. Students are provided information about understanding their "blind spots," strategies for bolstering their negotiation skills, and discuss with each other how they can apply this to their professional role, all within the context of interpersonal teaming and clinical care. Patient Transfer Lab

Students work together to educate and problem solve tub, toilet, and bed transfers for simulated patients with various conditions.

Spring semester

Poverty Simulation Participants simulate a month of living on low income and make sure their families bills are paid and needs are met. Participants spend four 15-minute weeks interacting with volunteers who portray the agencies and service providers in the simulated small town followed by a 30-60 minute debrief.

Social Determinants of Health Patient Case Students work together in small groups to navigate various social determinant of health needs for a patient at three different points of care: 1) hospital admission, 2) hospital discharge, and 3) a home visit.

Transitions of Care: Interprofessional Team-based Care Study Students navigate the care of a patient in an ambulatory care setting. The patient is being seen in clinic as a follow-up visit after a recent hospital discharge for hypertensive emergency. The students are provided different documents based on profession (e.g. medicine - hospital discharge notes; pharmacy - medication fill history) and must work together to determine possible reasons for recent admission and how to prevent them in the future. Additionally, the second part of the activity is based on patient education. The students must work together to educate the patient on disease state management and medications.

Color of Care Documentary Screening

A screening of the documentary The Color of Care, from executive producer Oprah Winfrey:

"The Color of Care is a new documentary that traces the origins of racial health disparities to practices that began during slavery in the U.S. and continue today. Using moving testimony from those who lost loved ones to COVID-19 and frontline medical workers in overwhelmed hospitals, it interweaves expert interviews and powerful data to expose the devastating toll of embedded racism in our healthcare system."
