Department of Surgery

University of Tennessee Health Science Center's Department of Surgery is committed to excellence in patient care and is recognized for the rigorous classroom and intensive clinical training provided to our medical students and residents.

 

Divisions

Cardiac Surgery

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center, in conjunction with Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, will offer world-class care in all areas of cardiovascular medicine through the new UTHSC-Methodist Cardiac Institute. 

General Surgery

The Division of General Surgery at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center has a long and proud tradition of excellence in clinical care, surgical education and research. The Division provides high quality surgical care across all UT Methodist hospitals, promotes improved patient outcomes through innovative research endeavors and trains the next generation of surgeon leaders.

The Division of General Surgery consists of three sections: Acute Care, Bariatric Surgery and Minimally Invasive Surgery.

Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery

The Division of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital and the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center is a fully comprehensive surgical service taking care of neonates, infants, children and adults with congenital heart disease and related thoracic and vascular anomalies.

Our team of surgeons includes internationally recognized surgeons in the field of complex congenital and acquired cardiac lesions and end-stage heart failure. Our Division includes nurse practitioners and physician assistants, but all patients are seen twice daily by board certified cardiac surgeons. Our team regularly manages patients referred locally, regionally and internationally.

Pediatric Surgery

The Division of Pediatric Surgery at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center is dedicated to improving the health and welfare of all infants, children and adolescents through evidence-based clinical care, groundbreaking research and education. 

Our team of clinicians includes nationally recognized surgeons, highly trained nurse practitioners and outstanding residents in training.  From addressing complex fetal anomalies with our colleagues in the Le Bonheur Fetal Center to managing rare vascular anomalies in the Vascular Anomaly Center to addressing childhood obesity through our Healthy Lifestyles Clinic, our team of clinicians is committed to outstanding patient and family-centered care. 

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Established in 1911, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) is the education and research hub of one of the nation’s oldest and largest medical centers.  Our department is committed to outstanding clinical care, education and research.  Our faculty offer compassionate, cutting-edge patient care consistent with the latest medical evidence, as only a top academic health science center can provide.  We are fortunate to have faculty who are renowned in their fields and widely acclaimed for their expertise.  Our professors educate the next generation of plastic surgeons with the best available scientific and clinical knowledge.  We are supported by a talented administrative, clinical and research staff that is committed to excellence. 

Surgical Oncology
The Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center exists to improve the health and well-being of patients diagnosed with a wide variety of benign and malignant tumors.  We are committed to improving the lives of those we serve through evidence based surgical care surgical care, innovative research and multidisciplinary collaborations. 

The Division is comprised of surgeons, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, surgical fellows and residents all who are focused on the highest quality patient and family-centered care. The Division provides assessment, treatment planning and surgical services the cover all aspects of surgical oncology.

Thoracic Surgery

The Division of Thoracic Surgery is dedicated exclusively to the practice of general thoracic surgery (non-cardiac surgery) with a special emphasis to minimally-invasive and robotic thoracic surgery.

The minimally-invasive surgical technique decreases discomfort and allows for faster return to usual activities for our patients. Our interest is in caring for patients with benign, malignant thoracic and esophageal diseases, with a special interest and expertise in lung cancer, esophageal cancer, benign esophageal pathologies, thymomas, myasthenia gravis, chest wall tumors and pleural diseases. We perform surgery for hyperhidrosis in the hands, axillae and face.

Transplantation 

The Division of Transplantation at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, in partnership with the Methodist Transplant Institute, is dedicated to pursuing excellence in patient experience, clinical quality and safety, while pushing the boundaries of transplant science through innovation and research. Based in an academic medical setting at Methodist University Hospital, we are dedicated to teaching the future of transplantation through specialty hepatology, nephrology and transplantation fellowship programs. Partnering with our research team, we are focused on providing cutting edge transplant therapies through both basic and clinical research.

Trauma/Surgical Critical Care

The Elvis Presley Trauma Center in the Regional Medical Center is home to the only Level I Trauma Center within 150 miles. It is one of the busiest trauma centers in the country, with a high volume of penetrating and blunt trauma. We oversee a 22-bed dedicated trauma intensive care unit, an 18-bed general intensive care unit and a 28-bed trauma step-down unit.  In 2017, there were approximately 2,255 shock trauma activations with 3,800 trauma admissions including 900 admissions to an intensive care unit.  In addition, we offer three fellowship positions in Surgical Critical Care.  Our fellowship program has produced several national leaders in the field of trauma and surgical critical care.

Vascular and Endovascular Surgery

The Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery provides comprehensive care for the complete depth and breadth of vascular surgical problems. Our group serves as the tertiary referral resource for Tennessee and the greater Mid-South region.
Our care is delivered at Regional One Heath, Baptist Memorial Hospital, and the Memphis VA Hospital. We care for the Mid-South Regions vascular injuries at The Elvis Presley Trauma Center and provide vascular surgical expertise for the care of pediatric patients with vascular problems at both Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
