Advancing Cancer Research Across Tennessee
The University of Tennessee Health Science Center in October 2025 hosted the inaugural Statewide Cancer Research Conference, a new forum designed to strengthen collaboration, expand research infrastructure, and attract state and federal support for cancer research and care across Tennessee.
The two-day conference featured a keynote address by Alan J. Tackett, PhD, distinguished professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, deputy director of the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute, and Scharlau Family Endowed Chair for Cancer Research at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.
Plenary sessions spotlighted four key areas: Clinical Research, Population Health, Translational Research, and Drug Discovery. Lunch-time networking events within these focus areas further encouraged connections and collaboration. READ MORE ABOUT THE CONFERENCE >>

Contribute to the Cancer Discovery Fund
Did you know that cancer is the second leading cause of death in Tennessee? The CDC reports that Tennessee has the 21st highest cancer incidence rate and the sixth highest cancer mortality rate in the U.S.
UT Health Science Center is dedicated to researching new discoveries and better treatment options for patients with cancer across Tennessee and beyond. For Giving Day 2025 and beyond, we have created a new fund called the Cancer Discovery Fund.
Dollars in this fund will be awarded to faculty and students who want to conduct cancer research. The new grant program to distribute these research dollars will be spearheaded by Vice Chancellor for Research Jessica Snowden, MD.
