RESEARCH FUNDAMENTALS

Designed specifically for researchers at all career stages, this ongoing series aims to provide practical knowledge and essential tools to help you succeed in your research journey. Each session will feature experts from across campus and external partners, offering insights into critical areas that support and elevate your work.

Whether you're new to research or looking to refine your skills, this series will equip you with the resources and connections you need to thrive. 

All presentations will be from 12:00 – 1:00 pm in the Freeman Auditorium (930 Madison, 3rd Floor).
Lunch will be provided to the first 50 attendees.
All presentations will be live-streamed and recorded.

AUGUST 19: Telling Your Story: Scientific Storytelling in Changing Times
Jessica Snowden, MD, Vice Chancellor for Research
      • This presentation will be a practical session designed to help scientists communicate their work clearly and confidently with the media and public audiences. Dr. Snowden will cover how to prepare for interviews, simplify complex topics, and stay on message during media interactions.
 
SEPTEMBER 16: Navigating the Research Core Facilities
Daniel Johnson, PhD, Director of the Molecular Resource Center and Molecular Bioinformatics Core
      • Dr. Johnson will discuss all of the new technologies at MRC, MBIO, and PMC. Dr. Laribee will present recent data generated by the cores.

OCTOBER 21: The Biomedical Writer's Toolkit: a How-to Approach to Academic Writing in the Sciences
Kyle Johnson, PhD, Director of the Office of Scientific Writing
      • This presentation will discuss the use of innovative tools that can help researchers to more readily integrate writing into their regular practice, increasing their ability to produce timely manuscripts and grant applications.

NOVEMBER 18: BioRender 101: Getting Started With BioRender!

This presentation will assist you in getting started with BioRender. Join this exclusive introductory presentation tailored for researchers and scientists, to discover how BioRender can enhance the quality of your scientific figures. During this presentation, gain valuable insights and practical techniques for creating compelling science figures for use in posters, presentations, publications, and more. The session will also provide an overview of the BioRender platform, as well as updates on some of the new & advanced features available.

Join the BioRender Team to learn to learn actionable strategies for creating clear, publication-ready figures, including:
          • Selecting effective color palettes for scientific illustrations
          • Optimizing space and margins for clarity
          • Labeling and numbering sequential figures
          • Adjusting contrast and saturation for maximum impact
          • Following journal guidelines while maintaining creative flexibility
