Health Professional Loans

The Health Professional Student Loan Program (HPSL) is a long-term, low-interest (5 percent) loan to assist students who are undertaking the course of study in Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy. These loans are made by the University from funds provided by the federal government. The amount of the loan is based on the student's need and availability of funds. Eligibility and award amounts are determined by the Financial Aid Office.

Loans for Disadvantaged Students

LDS has a 5% interest rate-12 month grace period. UTHSC participates in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Professions Student Loan program. The amount of funds awarded varies each year based on availability of funds. The total amount of the loan for any academic year for LDS funds may not exceed a student’s Cost of Attendance. To be eligible, students are required to meet the Student Eligibility Criteria established by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for LDS.

Institutional Loans

University of Tennessee Health Science Center offers a limited number of institutional loans. These low-interest loans are generally made available to students through the Financial Aid Office. Institutional loans are generally funded through endowments made available to the University by alumni, donors and other supporters of the University. Eligibility and award amounts are determined by the Financial Aid Office.

Emergency Student Loans

Emergency loans are available for students through the college Dean’s Admissions and Student Affairs Office. The application for the emergency loan is accessible on-line. Student Emergency Loans are based on need and availability of funds. Students may borrow up to $600.00. A different amount can be requested for less. If more is requested, it must be justified and/or approved by the Financial Aid Office.

Emergency loans must be repaid within 60 days after receipt with repayment or a late fee of $30.00 will be charged. You cannot have more than one outstanding emergency loan. All previous emergency loans must be repaid before another one can be issued. The University is not obligated to send reminder notices before the payment is due.

New students are not eligible for an emergency loan before the commencement of classes. Graduating students are not eligible for an emergency loan 90 days prior to graduation.
