2017 Resource Fair
Something for Everyone in Simulation
Healthcare simulation is a range of activities that share a broad, similar purpose – to improve the safety, effectiveness, and efficiency of healthcare services. This presentation will review the various simulation–based education, assessment, research, and systems integration activities available at UTHSC.
Simulation-Improving Patient Safety - 2:30-3:10 PM
In recent years, there has been an emphasis on examining healthcare system processes
for identifying latent safety errors and improving performance of healthcare providers.
This session will illustrate how various modalities of simulation can be used to proactively
discover these risk factors, to improve the performance of health care teams and to
make patient care safer.
Roles, Realities, and Manikins - 3:15-3:55 PM
The pedagogy of using simulation as an educational modality has evolved greatly in
recent years. What was once a “whim” is now backed by educational theory and best
practice. In this session, participants will experience each phase of a simulation
session and gain a better understanding of how simulation enhances the educational
process.
Education-Focused Panel - 2:30-3:10 PM
Learn about innovative educational activities and learn how you can do this too! The
education-focused panel has 3 sets of “panelists” - one set represents a project where
faculty and librarians collaborated to develop and use a video game in an online health
informatics course; one set represents a project where faculty and academic technology
consultants collaborated to conduct an “OSCE-type” simulation incorporating standardized
patients (patient proxies) using Zoom technology; and the third are some of UTHSC’s
academic technology consultants who will speak to how you can incorporate innovative
approaches in your educational activities.
Research-focused Panel: aka-Things you Wanted from the Office of Research but were
Afraid to Ask for! - 3:15-3:55 PM
The overarching goal of the Office of Research is to foster an outstanding environment
of support for UTHSC researchers on all its campuses. Highlights of a few key changes
are the planned unification of all existing pre- and post-award functions into an
Office of Sponsored Programs; recent enhancements to Institutional Core capabilities;
new CORNET award opportunities and the launch of Pure (UTHSC Experts and Funding Discovery
Module); and the opening of an Office of Scientific Writing. Dr. Steven Youngentob,
Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Research, will provide a brief overview of these
changes. His summary will be followed by an audience directed Q & A session. In addition
to Dr. Youngentob, Dr. Richard Redfearn (Office of Scientific Writing), Dr. Tiffany
Seagroves (Intuitional Cores) and Ms. Lisa Youngentob (Office of Research Development)
will be available to answer questions. This session will provide valuable up-to-date
information for the research community and provide attendees with the opportunity
to learn more about important resources.
